The Divine Reality Comedy Circus in Monroe Park

Bread & Puppet Theater will present The Divine Reality Comedy Circus in Monroe Park at 3pm on Sunday, October 28th! THE DIVINE REALITY COMEDY CIRCUS features famous rats leaving a sinking ship, the triumph of the small farmer, smart advice on where to get your water, a celebratory ballet by a flock of roosters, the Rotten Idea Theater Company’s distillation of political issues and much more, all accompanied by the Bread & Puppet Circus Band.

From the Press Release:

Take note that if some of the circus acts are politically puzzling to adults, accompanying kids can usually explain them.
This new work from Bread & Puppet Theater will be performed by nine puppeteers from their company and a group of volunteer performers from your local community! Admission: Donations strongly suggested! The performance in Richmond is co-produced by Candyland Music and the Fan District Association. The Bread & Puppet Theater is one of the oldest non-profit, self-supporting theatrical companies in the U.S. The theater has been enacting its radical utopian vision in cardboard and cloth for over forty years, from the spectacle of its larger-than-life puppets at Vietnam War protests in New York City to the pageantry of its long-running (over 25 years) annual event, “Our Domestic Resurrection Circus; in Glover, Vermont. The latter event regularly attracted audiences in the tens of thousands up to the late 1990’s. Author and NPR commentator Andrei Codrescu has praised “the genius of Peter Schumann
[artistic director], the prodigious puppet-God,” writing “the Bread & Puppet Theater has been so long a part of America’s conscious struggle for our better selves, that it has become, paradoxically, a fixture of our subconscious.”

  1. I strongly urge my friends and neighbors (kids of all ages) to come see bread and puppet theatre this Sunday. These are the kind of attractions that make living downtown worthwhile for me. Many of the puppeteers are traveling far to perform for us. Many thanks to Lily Lamberta and her compatriots for sharing their time, bread and talents!
