Silver & Rain

Today was Election Day. Voting was very light for a number of reasons – it rained, the polling station moved without much fanfare from William Byrd Community House to the Landmark Theater, and the ballot was very short. Delegate McLellan was unopposed for her seat, and Donald McEachin won the State Senate seat.

But McEachin did have competition from Oregon Hill resident Silver Persinger, who according to current polls (numbers are still coming in), captured 28% of the vote. Silver’s Socialist platform and website (www.votesilver.com) received a lot of attention outside of the local mainstream media. What is especially noteworthy about Silver’s candidacy is that its the first time in decades that that someone challenged the Democratic Party candidate for this office.

Another Oregon Hill resident and a Green Party member, Rain Burroughs, spent part of today demonstrating downtown in favor of a Congressional resolution (House 333) which calls for the impeachment of Vice President Cheney. She got a lot of affirmative honks…
