RTD 1/3/08 – VCU razes historic Oregon Hill stable

“It’s sad that historic buildings can be just mowed down without more care,” said Todd Woodson, executive director of the Oregon Hill Home Improvement Council, one of the groups that led a spirited but unsuccessful battle against the university’s expansion plan.

    [...]

The demolished stable at 917 Green Alley was one of two behind the former City Auditorium, now VCU’s Cary Street Gymnasium. The other stable, at 911 Green Alley, will be moved in March to another university-owned property a block away to make way for construction of a 100,000-square-foot recreation center by early 2010.

    [...]

Oregon Hill residents say the recreation center is far too big for the residential neighborhood adjoining it along Cherry and Cumberland streets, and they worry about the traffic and parking problems it will generate.
