I can’t think of any reason for the swearing-in of a public official to be a private event. An event can be public and still be small and virtually cost-free.

That’s not been my experience. My father was sworn in three times as a Chesterfield supervisor and the ceremonies were relatively small – attended by only family, the judges and 1-2 dozen senior county officials. There were no speeches – just each official giving his oath of office.

Personally, I’d rather the city didn’t spend money on a big event. Let Mayor Jones take his oath before witnesses then get down to business.
