Trash Problem on Idlewood

Despite multiple communications over the past year with the City’s Public Works and Community Development, as well as letters to the property owner, this trash pile remains a sore spot. Its right along the sidewalk and its one of the first things people see when they enter into the neighborhood from the west. Visitors to the Tuesday Byrd House Market often have to walk around it. Despite City Code violations, the trash cans are hardly ever taken away from the street back to the residents’ yards. Really, one easy solution would be to create a trash containment area along the alley which goes north behind the residences just a few yards away, and make sure residents use it. City trash trucks are supposed to be picking up from the back alleys in the neighborhood. The owner of these row houses which face the 200 block of S. Cherry, is a man named Hugh Edmunds. He continues to rent to VCU students while he lives over in the Windsor Farms neighborhood.

There have also been multiple noise complaints about these houses over the past few years, with at least one being on the Richmond police CAPS list. Sadly, some of the longtime residents on the 300 block of S. Cherry have moved away in part to the ongoing nuisances.

Years ago, I used to attend parties at 238 S. Cherry when Mike Gangloff lived there. Mike ran his own record label, Radioactive Rat, from that house. Sometimes he would even have bands play there. He made a point of warning neighbors a few days before and making sure the loudness was over before midnight. Then we would QUIETLY hang out while enjoying a few of Mike’s excellent homebrew pumpkin ales.

  1. I agree that this trash is a problem, however I doubt that your idealized version of your “younger years” is that close to truth. I’ve had shows at my home before and although we would always attempt to keep the volume of people as quiet as we could, there really is no controlling the volume of a group of drunk people. Sure the newer residents on the 200 block of Cherry are now more closely mimicking the Oregon Hill Hell Block of 200 Laurel, but I doubt that your partying days were that relaxed. If they were, I am sorry for you.

  2. Perhaps. Back then the internet was not nearly as popular. I would also say that we had the Grace Street music scene, so house shows were more rare. If we really wanted to see a loud band with a loud audience, we could walk or bike over there to one of the many nightclubs/restaurants.

The advanced warning to neighbors made a big difference. And Mike would have never left his trash out like that. The 200 blocks of Laurel and Cherry were not “Hell Blocks” because people treated the neighborhood better. They knew better.

  3. Back during my “late night partying” days, we used to party in Oregon Hill all the time but you just couldnt get away with having an all night drunken screaming party. We knew that we would suffer the wrath of the community. Back then, if one had the urge to stay out all night there were after hours private clubs and downright illegal shot houses. The stupid ass screaming at the top of your lungs, piss and puke as you go at 3AM is a relatively new dynamic for this neighborhood.

  4. I’m guessing Hugh Edmunds would not be OK with this if it was happening in Windsor Farms.

  5. I remember living in Oregon Hill. i remember the parties the masses of drunken crazies out at 3 in the morning on the 300 block of Laurel, and Cherry and, 200 of Laurel, and the 400 block of Pine 10 years ago! Puking at 3 am is not a new thing. These things happened all the time. The point being this behavior is nothing new for the area it may be the frequency or the fact you aren’t the one doing it. Its not the landlord throwing the parties its the tenents.

  6. Marty is worthless and seems to pride himself on doing nothing for this neighborhood even though VCU “promised” to put in funds for a party patrol. Mr Edmunds and his wife are nice folks and do maintain the properties but they seem to rent exclusively to students. Many Many calls for police service at these properties over the last few years due to out of control parties.

  7. Thankfully, I saw this morning that someone has moved the cans and pile off the sidewalk….for now.

On to the “recycling” on the 200 block of S. Laurel.

  8. Hugh might be a “nice man.” but he is virtually braindead.
We have a “screamin demon” on China Street. He has been indulging in the aforementioned behavior for 30plus years…prides himself in being an a**hole. Hasn’t everyone heard “Jaaaaaaack, sooooooon!!!!!!” in the middle of the night.

  9. This placed has been a good mix of students and white trash for a good while now, they both know how to party and disrespect property, even their own. If you were looking for something else why did you come here. Would you ask someone unattractive for a date? Don’t try changing my lady (the hill) JUST LEAVE!! P.S. Thanks to anonymous for the props.

  10. This neighborhood has always been pretty tolerant, but that tolerance is being tested. The trash problem needs attention. And student renters will be held accountable for problems with neighbors. This is not VCU campus.
But personally, that does not mean I am going to babysit every dispute between neighbors either.

  11. On the Trash Issue I, an Oregon Hill resident, got super excited. I didn’t notice anything outrageous in the way of trash until this past week. New Dumpsterdiving opportunity!! This is the prime picking time when students all over O-hill and the Fan move out ditching piles and piles of usable junk. I look forward to it each year.

  14. The trash pile has been there since at least the early seventies (as long as I can remember, anyway)…You crybabies think folks should stand at attention because you were stupid enough to buy tarpaper shack luxury condos at a 350% markup?…This is how the hill has been for over 120 years, and its not going to change because your carpetbagging Realtor sold you on the river view. Whats next?…sending the health department around to stop Riff women from biting their toenails while they sit on the front porch?

  15. I am currently writing a sit-com about Oregon Hill. I hope to sell it to NBC. Please post all of the dirt!

  16. they took the space where the trash cans used to be in the back alley. They moved the cans to this location on the street. That was 4 years ago. Took you a while to notice.
