  1. Ridiculous. Went to the market yesterday and had to ride my bike up into that yard to get around this mess. There was a woman trying to push a stroller on the sidewalk who had to detour into the street. It was a hazardous situation at 530pm in evening traffic.

  2. A couple of things to keep in mind-

Neighborhood leaders have been in contact with City and VCU about this problem for months. While I think Councilperson Jewell needs to do more about this situation, his office is not legally allowed to order City workers around. I know the City code enforcement workers by name and I know they are overworked and understaffed, especially right now with many renters moving. Many of them do the best job they can under the circumstances. That’s not to say that City workers AND citizens cannot help each other do a better job.

As I have stated before – “an easy solution would be to create a trash containment area along the alley which goes north behind the residences just a few yards away, and make sure residents use it. City trash trucks are supposed to be picking up from the back alleys in the neighborhood.”

VCU does bear some responsibilty for making sure its students live up to community standards. I am looking forward to having more student volunteers help.

Ultimately this is the responsibility of property owners.
