Folk Festival Performers Scheduled For October

Today, a mere seven months out from the Richmond Folk Festival, we have the first round of performers for you to peruse. Behold! The first six performers, with genres ranging from Reggae to traditional Tsimshian song-and-dance.

Git-Hoan Dancers (Traditional Tsimshian dance and song)
Larry Chance & The Earls (Doo-wop)
Magic Slim & The Teardrops with Big Time Sarah (Chicago Blues)
Mary Jane Lamond Quartet ft. Wendy MacIsaac (Cape Breton)
Mighty Diamonds (Reggae)
Steve Riley & The Mamou Playboys (Cajun)
As we get more information about all the various folky aspects of the Festival we’ll be updating things left and right. You can always check rvanews.com/folk for the latest information. Oh, it’s October 14 – 16, if you’re trying to mark your calendars.

Councilman Marty Jewell to hold meeting Thursday

WHAT The Honorable E. Martin “Marty” Jewell, Councilman, Richmond City Council, Central 5th District, will hold a meeting in the Central 5th District. Councilman Jewell holds individual meetings in Richmond’s Central 5th District throughout the year that include information on his goals and accomplishments; a topical agenda of current interest; and, special guests. Open High School senior named Boys & Girls Clubs’ Youth of the Year

From Richmond Public Schools press release:

Beersheba Pointer, a senior at Richmond’s Open High School, has been named the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Richmond’s 2011 Youth of the Year.
Pointer, who plans to attend the College of William and Mary and major in business administration next fall, received her award and a $15,000 scholarship at the organization’s 10th Annual Distinguished Leadership Awards Dinner held last month.

American Red Cross and Asian American Society of Central Virginia
hosting Japanese earthquake community forum

The American Red Cross and the Asian American Society of Central
Virginia are hosting a forum to update the community as to how local
organizations are responding to the devastation of the recent earthquake
in Japan. The meeting, scheduled for Tuesday, March 15th from 2-3 p.m.,
will be held at the Red Cross, 420 East Cary Street. The public is
invited.

Grace Street as Chinatown

One of the benefits of living in Oregon Hill, so near the VCU campus, is the plethora of food choices available. Oh sure, we have good restaurants like Mamma Zu’s, Pescados, and 821 Cafe right in the neighborhood, and Elephant Thai and the chain Chili’s nearby. But only a few more blocks away is what one local artist describes as “Richmond’s Chinatown”, ready to fill student appetites.

I just wish that the Grace Street places would ease up on the “door hanger” flyers (many of which we eventually have to pick up as litter) and start advertising on this and other RVAnews community news sites instead.
