Connecting The Canals

When Venture Richmond’s Jack Berry did his presentation to OHNA, he said that there had never been a study to connect the canals.

Yet here one is:

I guess Berry just did not know, but then he’s been around Richmond for a long time. It’s certainly not the first time that plans for RIchmond have been buried, only to be dug up by citizens later.

  1. Congratulations on finding this hidden file, Scott. Some pals and I have been pushing the canal connection without success for years — even suggesting European style boat lifts over the flood wall to connect the two canals.

Canal boats from Great Ship Lock all the way to Maymont will be the only way to make Richmond’s waterways a viable asset to the City.

Page 20 in the PDF file shows how it can be done, but they’d better hurry up before The Locks Apartment project makes it impossible.

Next goal: Demand that Norfolk/Western repair the bascule bridge so that boats can connect between the Kanawa Canal and James River.

  2. Must have been the evil no good corporations that buried this file! Darn those employers! Darn them!!!

  3. This article from the Times Dispatch seems to offer some hope of a compromise.

Pearsall said filling the uphill bank of the canal would allow unobstructed sightlines to an amphitheater at the base of the hill and leave the canal undamaged, preserving the possibility of a continuous canal system all the way from 25th Street to Maymont. That, Pearsall said, would be a significant tourist attraction.
