Through talking to an employee at 821 Cafe, I cobbled together the following information about businesses on the 800 block of West Cary Street, Oregon Hill’s commercial face, and it’s all exciting news.

The former storefront at 825 West Cary Street that once housed a barber shop many decades ago, but has been abandoned for some time is undergoing a total renovation. As of right now it has an earth floor and is a shell. It along with the house at 823 west Cary that sits behind a privacy fence will be incorporated into one large commercial space where 821 will move.

The portion in front of the soon to be former residency will become outdoor patio seating, as it is recessed from the sidewalk by 15 feet or so. Thus 821 will become 823-825. Confused yet? If not let me try harder.

After the move is complete a new restaurant will move into the existing 821. Lastly, Salvation Tattoo, which is currently in the former OHHIC office on the 300 block of south Pines is rumoured to be moving into the storefront at 819 west Cary that was last occupied by the Lotus Market Cafe close to a decade ago.

All of this does a lot to bolster the neighborhood’s desire to see more infill commercial along our northern border, and it should add a lot of street level activity. The timeframe for the completion of 823-825 is September.

Hi everyone-
On Monday APRIL 21ST will be another community dinner @6pm. They
are now every 3rd Monday of the month. A lot of people didn’t get our
newsletter, don’t know what SynerGeo is, or aren’t on this group so
they don’t know about it. So we want your help to spread the word.
Please tell any O.Hill residents about it and remind them to join
us!!!
If anyone is new to the group or knowing about SynerGeo, I’ll do
a quick recap. We are a small non-profit at the corner of S. Laurel
school art programs for K-5th graders and we recently started a teen
center on Wednesday nights from 5:30-7:30pm and run multiple other
outreach programs.

So please join us on Monday April 21st for our dinner @6pm. Bring a
dish, dessert or side dish if you can and we look forward to having
you.

*******Also just to throw this out there, we still have spaces
available for our SUMMER ART CAMP!! It is July 28-Aug 1 and Aug 4-8th

If anyone hasn’t noticed yet, VCU is moving full steam ahead with the moving of the remaining Oregon Hill stable house from the rear of the former City Auditorium to the 100 block of south Linden Street. It’s quite an involved process that includes the construction of a temporary crushed gravel road to transplant the whole building and set it on its new foundation without any dips in the road surface. Follow this link for several photos I took today. There are lots of other historic and contemporary Oregon Hill photos on my site as well.

A short Biography on Mat Callahan:

Born 14 July 1951 in San Francisco. Mat’s Mother and Grandmother were dancers. He spent his childhood dancing at their school Peters Wright Creative Dance. At 13, he took up music. Later, he got involved with the Black Panthers and other revolutionaries. Refused induction into the US Army. Worked with San Francisco Mime Troupe and co-founded the Mime Troupe sponsored band Red Rock. He began composing and performing with the duo Prairie Fire, recording several records and touring the US. Upon his return to San Francisco he formed a band called the Looters. They made several albums, toured the US, Canada, Nicaragua and Europe. He helped found the artists’ collective Komotion International. Spent ten years operating art gallery, recording studio and performance space. Edited and published the magazine Komotion. Produced albums for numerous artists. Authored the book Sex, Death and the Angry Young Man. Formed group the Wild Bouquet. Made two albums. Toured US, Canada and Europe. Began work on Testimony. Testimony published Spring 2000. Began work on the album on “San Francisco”. “San Francisco” completed September 2001. Completed “The Trouble With Music” in 2005.

A recent live review of Mat and Yvonne:

Gabe Kindler of the Sursee Woche, January 24, 2008:

“The voices of Mat Callahan and Yvonne Moore harmonize not only very well, but often blend on stage and create something so new and intense that no one can escape from. They are vocally powerful and poetic, producing acoustic intensity and touching intimacy.

Songs with fascinating rhythms and sound patterns tell American stories about rebels, outcasts, and the hunted. They return at times to the era of protest songs during the Seventies and Eighties, but always lead back to the present.

They invite the audience to their parlor, and make clear how the joining of two musical worlds create a thrird, which, to discover, seems an enjoyable adventure for both of them.”
