BackStory is a smart history radio show/podcast whose May 2010 show Grave Matters: A History of Death and Mourning includes an Ed Ayers tour of Hollywood Cemetery:

On each show, renowned U.S. historians Ed Ayers, Peter Onuf, and Brian Balogh tear a topic from the headlines and plumb its historical depths. Over the course of the hour, they are joined by fellow historians, people in the news, and callers interested in exploring the roots of what’s going on today. Together, they drill down to colonial times and earlier, revealing the connections (and disconnections) between past and present.

Craigslist has word on a missing cat:

lost tabby cat (200 block of cherry) – 1 1/2 yr old black, grey and tan tabby. he was never one to keep his collar on so probably is tag-less. he is friendly but can be skittish please help! if anyone has seen him or have him please email me or call me 571 239 8739

The Valentine Richmond History Center’s Highlights of Hollywood walking tour will be April 1 from 10-11:30AM:

Learn about the cemetery’s history, artwork and symbolism, as well as the famous personalities buried there, including two U.S. Presidents, writer Ellen Glasgow, Confederate President Jefferson Davis and Generals George Pickett and J.E.B. Stuart.

Meet your guide at the rear of the stone structure on the left at the cemetery entrance at Cherry and Albemarle Streets. $10 (Pay your guide on the day of the tour. ) Members: $5

A follow-up tour takes place on April 12 from 2-4PM:

An extension of the daily “Highlights” tour, this version covers in more detail the cemetery’s unique history, landscape design, architecture, symbols and residents.

A very young, female cat has been hanging around our place this weekend. She is a very cute medium haired white and grey cat, approximately twelve to fourteen weeks or so with green eyes. She looks to have been lost awhile ago.

Richmond Area Ridefinder has word on a great ride leaving out of Oregon Hill in a few hours:

The Mamma Zu ride begins at 9:30 A.M., Monday, January 19 from the intersection of Spring and Pine Streets in Richmond’s Oregon Hill neighborhood.

Challenge. Ride 40 (or 30) miles along the James River with temperatures in the low thirties. Climb several short and some steep hills, and the two-mile Old Gun hill.

Reward. Scenic views of the James River and forest lined roads, some fast descents, and post ride lunch with cycling friends at Mamma Zu.

The Adolph B. Rice Studio Collection constitutes a unique photographic record of life in Richmond, Virginia from 1949 to 1961. The collection consists of more than 16,000 4 x 5 inch film negatives from the commercial studio of Adolph B. Rice.

Adolph B. Rice Sr. (1909-1960) opened his first photo studio in Richmond in 1949. The studio remained on North Auburn Avenue until it ceased operation in 1961. Rice was an active member of the Virginia Professional Photographer Association and the Virginia Press Photographers Association. With a reputation for quality commercial work, his clients included businesses, industry, and state and local government. Photo assignments ranged from studio portraits, to aerial views to advertising shots for local department stores. After his death in 1960, the studio was owned and operated by his son Adolph B. Rice, Jr. (1937-1974). The collection was later donated to the Library of Virginia.

Last night my scooter/moped was stolen from infront of my house in Oregon Hill. It is a red scooter that seats two people and is from red streak motors. At the time it was in good condition. It has two small white scratches, one on the front and one on the side. It is also missing a back reflector.

Lieutenant Drew’s monthly report from September (PDF) for the Richmond Police Departments Sector 413 is now available:

Oregon Hill crime was up 50% from 2007 – 4 to 6 crimes. 3 of the 6 crimes occurred in the 200 block of S. Cherry Street (A car, a bike and some plants were stolen.) Residents (in that block especially) should report any suspicious activity. There was one other bike, wheels from a car and license plates stolen in your neighborhood.

Have you lost or or would you like a cat? (via Craig’s List)

There is an adorable friendly black cat, who responds to the name “snuffles” currently on my back porch. On the skinny side so he may have been a stray, but is so people friendly you could never tell. He is craving for attention and love. He likes soy milk and will rub up against anything he can. He also follows you around no matter how far you go and if he loses sight will run as fast as possible to catch up with you again.

I would keep him if I could, but I can’t. If this is your cat, or if it sounds like a cat you would be interested in, I really want to find him a good home. I’m not sure how he acts around other cats or anything.

Located smack in the middle of the city, the Central District is in the center of the city and is one of two districts that crisscross the James River. It covers a diverse swath of the city, from Oregon Hill near Virginia Commonwealth University south across the river to Hull Street.

It includes the communities of Woodland Heights, Springhill, Reedy Creek, Carytown, Oregon Hill, parts of the Fan and Swansboro. Maymont and Byrd parks are also in the 5th District.

August Really Really Free Market set for 8/30

The August Really Really Free Market has been announced for August 30 from noon ’til dark at Monroe Park.

Richmond’s Monthly really really free market is held on the last Saturday of every month from noon until dark in Monroe Park, at the corner of Main and Belvidere.

This month, it will be on Saturday August 30th.

Meeting Community Needs with Community Surplus.

A really really free market is an alternative to the capitalist version of a ‘free market’ where in fact, nothing is free. The really really free market is a place where people can come bring things they no longer need or use and give them away. The really really free market is a place where people can come get the things they need for free, without having to participate in the corporate, killer market. Really really free market builds community instead of destroying it.

People can come to share things besides the physical. Anyone interested in sharing their skills or knowledge through a workshop should let us know or just show up and teach others. Anyone interested in performing, music or reading poetry or whatever, should contact us or just show up.

So dig through your closets, take the extra from your work, ask your parents and friends and neighbors to come to bring stuff and come to get stuff. Bring clothes, furniture, food, tapes, cds, office supplies, kitchen stuff, knick knacks, paddy whacks, etc.
