“Do You Know Who Touches This Every Day?”

Some quick coronavirus news tidbits:

The Richmond Metropolitan Transit Authority’s pay stations are now only accepting E-Z Pass payment or exact change, which includes the Powhite Parkway, the Downtown Expressway and the Boulevard Toll bridge.

Vets are advising cat owners to keep their pets indoors if at all possible. It’s important to note that the animals themselves are not catching the disease.

And in what cannot be good news for RVA (Is that Dominion Chesterfield coal plant shut down yet?) “an increase of only [a TINY particle of pollution] in the air was associated with a 15% increase in the Covid-19 death rate”

And, perhaps not related to coronavirus…

A couple from out of state were charged with illegally discharging a gun near the James River Park yesterday. Some neighbors heard the gunfire on this side of the river.

Photos From Friday’s March

While Dominion’s RiverRock festival is still raging on the riverfront, here are some photos from Friday’s poignant environmental justice march, which ended with a rally at the Overlook. The official title was “End Environmental Racism Now: March With Union Hill, and it brought people of many faiths and ideologies (including Green Party) together to protest gas pipeline construction in Virginia. WRIC, Channel 8 news, did a good job of not only supplying video of the event, but informing people of the bigger picture (click here for story). While a few neighbors expressed some nervousness regarding this political happening outside their doors, they were gratified that the march organizers did a good job of making sure the area was clean afterwards.

Environmental Justice March On Friday

The Virginia chapter of the Sierra Club and other environmental groups are sponsoring a protest and march this Friday.

From their event page:

Virginians from all across the state will unite in common cause to oppose unjust and unneeded fracked-gas pipelines anywhere in the Commonwealth, and to stand in solidarity for environmental justice and the climate.
On Friday, May 17, we will gather in Richmond at Canoe Run Park with members of the Union Hill Community, William Barber, III and Karenna Gore, march across the Lee Bridge and end at the Oregon Hill Overlook, for a rally.

11am: Meet at Canoe Run Park (600 W 22nd St, RVA 23225)
Noon: March across the Lee Bridge
1pm: Gather at Oregon Hill Overlook (end of S. Pine Street)

Shooting At The Overlook

A little after 10 pm tonight, shooting broke out from a group of young men hanging out the Overlook condominiums at the end of South Laurel Street. It is unclear what exactly lead to the gunfire, but around 10 to 12 shots were fired. Thankfully, there are no reports of injuries, but at least one household reported bullets entering. The young men scattered and drove off in different vehicles.

After neighbors called 911, police arrived and gathered evidence.
