“Bordered by Cary and Belvidere Streets to the north and east and Oregon Hill Parkway and Hollywood Cemetery to the south and west, Oregon Hill was settled in the 1840s by Irish and Welsh ironworkers and continues to thrive as a tight-knit working class neighborhood. Using images from the History Center photograph collection, the exhibition will trace the development of the neighborhood’s residents, businesses, institutions and preservation challenges.”

WHO: City of Richmond Department of Public Works

WHAT: Bi-annual inspection

WHEN: Monday, May 11 until late May

WHERE: Robert E. Lee Bridge, northbound lanes

BACKGROUND: Motorists may experience additional delays, as the inspection will require occasional lane closures. Once the northbound lane inspection is complete, crews will perform an inspection on the southbound lanes. The public will be notified when this transition takes place.

A two-hour walk through this picturesque property along the James River, which is the final resting place for two U.S. presidents, Civil War generals, philanthropist Lewis Ginter and thousands of Union and Confederate soldiers. Meet your guide just beyond the stone house at the cemetery entrance at Cherry and Albemarle streets. Please park on the street. $10 ($5 History Center members).

Environmental/Veggie Potluck On Thursday

John Richmond and Caroline Cox host a veggie potluck dinner and environmental documentary. Everyone is welcome.

May 7th, Thursday

Vegetarian dinner is at 6pm. Documentary (Its TBA at the moment) is at 7pm.

Take me back to the senior prom

If you are age 55 or older, Richmond’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities invites you to take a trip down memory lane at the 2009 Spring Senior Prom.

The prom will be held May 7 at the Landmark Theater from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Entertainment includes performers singing “old school” tunes that you are sure to remember, and you’ll have a blast dancing the night away to music from the 1950s through today.

Hors d’oeuvres will be served, and you can bring appetizers for your table.

Reservations are only $24 for a table of eight. The deadline to make reservations is April 10.
