Oregon Hill, Randolph, and Uptown Neighborhood Litter Cleanup Scheduled For February 17th
RVA Clean Sweep is organizing an area clean up and litter pickup on Saturday, February 17 from 2:30 PM – 4:30 PM. Volunteers are meeting at Clark Springs Elementary (1101 Dance Street).

Clean Sweep is partnering with the Capital District of Circle K International for this three neighborhood cleanup. They are provide a larger group of volunteers and we need a handful of local residents to help guide the volunteers through the neighborhoods. Oregon Hill: Idlewood, Cumberland, Belvidere
Randolph: Idlewood, Allen, Harrison/Colorado
Uptown: Parkwood from Harrison to Meadow then back down Grayland• What to bring
Please bring water bottle and wear layers.• Important to know
There will be staged drop off points through the cleanup area. Details will be provided the day of.
RVA EFF Extended
Usually today is the last day of the RVA Environmental Film Festival. The Virginia Environmental Film Contest entries and winners will be screened at the Byrd Theatre this afternoon (along with two excellent features).
However the festival keeps growing and there are at three events next week that extend the film festival. So, tomorrow night, come enjoy short films and a filmmakers’ forum at the VCU Grace Street Theater.

“Hellfighters and Sons of Freedom” At The Virginia War Memorial Thursday

The 369th Infantry Regiment was the first African American regiment to serve with the American Expeditionary Forces during World War I. Known for their toughness in battle, they were nicknamed the “Hell Fighters” by the German army because they never lost a man through capture, lost a trench or a foot of ground to the enemy.
Join the Virginia War Memorial Executive Director Clay Mountcastle, as we commemorate the start of both Black History Month and the 100th Anniversary of the end of WWI. During his presentation, Clay will share the fascinating often untold, stories of these war heroes and many more, as he examines the larger role African-Americans played in The Great War.
Thursday from 5-7 pm, presentation starts at 6 pm. It’s free to attend but registration is strongly encouraged.
RVA EFF Kicks Off Tonight
The RVA Environmental Film Festival (RVA EFF) kicks off tonight at the Science Museum of Virginia. It goes on all this week and part of next week at venues around the area. All the shows are FREE (thanks to generous sponsors)!

Artifacts Roadshow At Virginia War Memorial Saturday
Style Magazine has a piece on the upcoming “Artifacts Roadshow” at the Virginia War Memorial.
Excerpt:
Whether a medal, canteen or helmet, every piece of military paraphernalia has its own distinctive story to tell.
One way to help unlock those stories is to take military-related items, whether passed down through the family, found in the attic or acquired antique hunting, to the Virginia War Memorial for the Artifacts Roadshow on Jan. 27.
The first-come, first-served event features Virginia War Memorial curator Jesse Smith, along with experts Robert House and Warren Shindle, examining items. House, whose area of expertise is firearms and edged weapons, works at Classic Firearms and Echoes of Glory Auction House in Virginia Beach and Shindle is a photo expert specializing in U.S. military photography from the 1840s to 1940s.
The public service event aims to help the public identify their memorabilia as well as any possible historical significance they hold. Artifacts of any era beginning with the War of 1812 through the Global War on Terrorism will be reviewed and preservation tips offered. There’s no admission charge or fee to have an expert review artifacts, although donations to the Virginia War Memorial are appreciated.

Here is the agenda for our first OHNA meeting of 2018 which will be held tomorrow, Tuesday night 1/23/2018 at 7 PM at the ST Andrews Parish House next to the church on S Laurel. The times are most certainly not set in stone but I want to keep things moving to make the most of your valuable time. WHERE:
· Idlewood Avenue from Harrison to Cherry Streets and
· I-95 Downtown Expressway/Belvidere Street off ramp
BACKGROUND: The aforementioned areas will be closed to complete the final stages of paving and to convert two-way traffic and pavement markings for the roundabout construction at the intersection of Idlewood Avenue, Grayland Avenue and the I-95 off ramp. Please use caution and follow the detour signs.
Thales Piano Trio at RPL’s Gellman Room Saturday

The Thales Piano Trio is proud to present music written by three women from three different countries and eras: Jennifer Higdon, Rebecca Clarke, and Clara Schumann.

Daniel Stipe, pianoThe Thales Piano Trio has performed as part of concert series’ across the Eastern seaboard, at venues including Washington College in Chestertown MD, Trinity Lutheran Church in Richmond VA, and St. Paul’s on the Green in Norwalk CT. In addition, they have presented house concerts at numerous private residences.
Now in their second season as an ensemble, the Thales Piano Trio is the product of more than a decade of musical collaboration between Ellen, Sara, and Daniel in all possible duo combinations: Ellen and Sara won a fellowship to study and perform as half of the Heiligenstadt Quartet at the Brevard Music Center; Sara and Daniel performed sonata repertoire together at Princeton University Chapel; since meeting in 2013, Daniel and Ellen have shared the stage frequently, including as part of the Belz-Parker Artists Ascending Concert Series in Memphis and the Forest Hill Recital Series in Richmond. The trio is named for the famous mathematician Thales (THAY-lees) of Miletus. Thales’ theorem states: If A, B and C are points on a circle where the line AC is a diameter of the circle, then the angle ∠ABC is a right angle. The musicians are thrilled to be “completing the triangle” by joining together to form a trio; as such they found Thales’ name particularly appropriate.
