Brené Brown Workshop for Young Adults

St. Andrew’s Church is hosting a workshop June 4-5 for young adults (age 21-32) based on the research of Brené Brown and her latest book, Rising Strong. This workshop is about showing up in the world as our deepest selves. We will delve into our stories, especially those of struggle, to explore what holds us back so that we can be the authors of our own lives. Cost: $25.00 (scholarship assistance available). Led by Abbott Bailey, Rector of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church and Beth Magill, Missioner at the Episcopal Student Center at the University of Texas – Austin, both Certified Daring Way (TM) Facilitators.

Date: 9:30 am June 4-5:30 pm June 5.
Location: Roslyn Retreat Center, Richmond, VA

Transit Meetings Tonight and Tomorrow

While Oregon Hill lost the GRTC route that used to go down S. Laurel Street years ago, we have lots of buses stopping on Belvidere Street.

As for the future of local mass transit, I have tried to chime in with some thoughts in the past, now here’s some more chances for more residents to give theirs. From Partnership for Smarter Growth announcement:

Don’t forget, tonight and tomorrow afternoon are the first round of Richmond Transit Network Plan meetings. This will be our plan for the next 20 years.
We’ll be talking about important questions, like where do we need service, how to improve access to jobs, how to link to revitalization of neighborhoods, do you want more frequency and reliability even if it means a slightly longer walk to a stop?

President James Monroe’s Birthday Memorial On Thursday

President James Monroe’s birthday celebration is an annual event at Hollywood Cemetery. A gravesite presidential wreathlaying ceremony will be hosted by the James Monroe Memorial Foundation. The event will begain at 11:0am, but is subject to any changes by the Army, which conducts the ceremony.

Friends of Hollywood Picnic Scheduled For May 1st

Join us for an annual tradition that dates back to the 1800s! Pack a picnic basket, bring a blanket or chairs, and relax to sounds of great entertainment in one of Richmond’s most beautiful settings! A hot dog truck and ice cream truck will be on hand. Trolley tours will also be available.

The picnic is free to attend, but we do ask that you RSVP in advance. Please email nshepherd@hollywoodcemetery.org to make reservations.

5th Annual 5K Run/Walk to Remember On Saturday

This Saturday, starting at 8 am is the 5th Annual 5K Run/Walk to Remember.

From Virginia War Memorial website:

Join us as we honor and remember the sacrifice of our United States military both past and present. The 5K race starts and finishes at the Memorial with a special Kids Fun Run. Memorial flags, each with the name of a deceased veteran or KIA, are placed at the finish line, reminding everyone of the purpose of this event. All funds benefit the Virginia War Memorial Foundation’s education programs.

Join hundreds of active servicemen and women in uniform for this walk/run. The course starts and ends at Virginia War Memorial and includes a trek through Hollywood Cemetery and Oregon Hill.

Tredegar Iron Works Historian To Speak On Tuesday

Well, last time this was scheduled, Slayer was playing the National, former President Bill Clinton paid a last minute visit to the Hippodrome, and there were tornado warnings, complete with VCU sirens. Let’s see what happens on Tuesday-

The Oregon Hill Home Improvement Council, (OHHIC) a neighborhood membership organization whose mission includes historical preservation, is presenting an author’s talk about historic Tredegar Iron Works on Tuesday, April 19th at 7 pm. Local historian Nathan Vernon Madison, a graduate of the University of Mary Washington (BA) and Virginia Commonwealth University (MA), will present and discuss his recently released book, Tredegar Iron Works. His account utilizes a wealth of primary sources and firsthand accounts to chronicle the full history of the Richmond industrial icon. The Oregon Hill neighborhood was built and occupied by many of the foundry’s workers and therefore has a special connection to this history. This author’s talk is co-hosted by St. Andrew’s Church and will take place in their chapel at 236 S. Laurel Street. After the presentation Mr. Madison will be available to sign books. This event is free and open to the public, however seating will be limited and RSVP’s are appreciated.

RVA Cleanup/VCU Paint The Town Green This Saturday

Randolph neighbors are looking for a few more volunteer hands this Saturday. We will be covering from Meadow to the western parts of Oregon Hill. In addition to the litter cleanup we will be working to finishing the storm drain marking we started last year.

We will meet at the Randolph a Community Center at 1415 Grayland from 9-12pm. If you can only come for an hour, we’ll take it! Thank you!
