TD Headline: “City weighs anti-littering campaign ahead of 2015 bike race”

From Times Dispatch article:

Agelasto’s resolution would ask the administration of Mayor Dwight C. Jones to develop an anti-litter campaign and conduct an “inventory and assessment of existing policies and budget resources within the city to address littering concerns.”
Agelasto pointed specifically to the issue of illegal dumping, saying the city is having to pick up twice as much as it did six years ago. He called dumping a problem that’s “getting out of control.”

Free Sports Library?

Inspired by Michael Bierut’s 100 Day Project, 100 Days to a Better RVA strives to introduce and investigate unique ideas to improving the city of Richmond.

From Day #5 article:

Take the Holly Street Park in Oregon Hill. The James River Park System could reclaim an old phone booth, cover it with murals, and put it at the bottom of the concrete ramp leading to the fields. Inside: basketballs, footballs, dodgeballs, frisbees, and jump ropes left by families who have upgraded or leftovers from the VCU Rec Center. A handy pump for the balls could also be tucked inside. Finally, a simple inscription: take a basketball, return a frisbee.

“Little free sports libraries” would be a very low cost way to provide a great pubic service. The boxes would be the largest cost, but there’s also plenty of room for creative ideas. Phone booths are near useless and could be repurposed. Old gutted vending machines could also do the job. Imagination is the only limitation.

Editor’s Note: Holly Street Playground is managed by the City’s Parks and Recreation Department, not the James River Park system.

No Parking On Oregon Hill Pkwy For Fireworks

Partly in response to the illegal parking during Dominion RiverRock, and partly due to the desire to make more room for pedestrians, the Oregon Hill Parkway will be closed to parking during the July 3 fireworks. Holly Street will be closed, except for Oregon Hill residents. As stated before, expect more Richmond police presence in Oregon Hill during the July 3 event.

Expect Police Presence For July 3rd Fireworks, Updated

Oregon Hill Neighborhood Association leaders have been meeting with the police ahead of the July 3 riverfront fireworks show.
From email:

Just a note that there will be 4 police officers in the neighborhood on July 3rd, starting around 3 in the afternoon.

We met with Lt Beazley and Officer Green this afternoon and discussed traffic and illegal parking.

They may close some of the alleys to thru traffic. The Lee bridge will be shut down around 7:30 pm.

There will still be a traffic backup getting out of the neighborhood, but we are hoping things will run a little smoother.

If you see any problems, let me know. I will be following up with the police on things that need to be changed or improvements that could be made for the next year.

Thanks
Jennifer

Update: It sounds like police will also close off Holly Street, 2nd Street, and the Lee Bridge at times during the event.
