JRA Volunteer Opportunities

There are several volunteer opportunities across the watershed to come out and help the James River. If you are interested in any of the events below, just let me know.

August 17: The Tire-Less James
Volunteers are needed to remove tires — and only tires — from the James River between Lynchburg and Richmond during the first Tire-less James Event. We recommend that you wear work gloves and closed toe shoes. Canoe or john boats are best. We are encouraging as many groups as possible to choose James River State Park (Dixon Landing) to Wingina (5.5 miles), there will be multiple historic James River batteaux on site to help carry out tires from this section. September 14, 9am-1pm: JRAC Cleanup
Join hundreds of volunteers across the James River watershed to clean up trash. Select from 15 different sites from Lynchburg to Newport News. Look at available sites and register online. Help with recycling is needed at the Reedy Creek site that JRA sponsors. http://www.jrac-va.org/events/cleanup/

September 21, 9:30 am – Noon: Rain Garden Maintenance and Cleanup
Help with weeding, planting, and mulching of several rain gardens. All tools will be provided. Please wear sturdy shoes and clothes that can get dirty. Meet in the parking lot behind Advance Auto, 6300 W Broad Street, Richmond. Pre-registration is required. To register, please contact Amber Ellis at 804-788-8811 ext 205 or volunteer(at)jrava.org.

September 22, Richmond Splash & Dash
The James River Splash & Dash is a competitive tube race which takes place near Richmond’s Belle Isle. After the race, JRA hosts an after party that includes a live music and food. Volunteers are needed for various tasks that day including registration, race marshals, and set up. http://www.jrava.org/splash-and-dash/richmond/index

Lanie Kruszewski Memorial Ride Set For Sunday

RICHMOND, VA—A group bicycle ride in memory of Lanie Kruszewski is set for this Sunday.

Monday marks the one year anniversary of the night the 24-year-old was struck and killed while riding her bicycle along River Road.

Elias Webb, the Richmond man convicted of felony hit-and-run in connection with the July 29th wreck, was sentenced in July to three years behind bars. In February, it took a jury of four men and 10 women just less than three hours to reach the verdict.

A group bike ride to remember Kruszewski is set for the evening of Sunday, August 4.

The 14-mile ride will go to the corner of River Road and Bridgeway Road, where a memorial for Kruszweski has been set up.

Riders are asked to meet Sunday at 7 p.m. at the Oregon Hill Outlook where Laurel Street meets the river.

Richmond’s Kanawha Canal was conceived by George Washington and bulldozed by … who? Venture Richmond? Newmarket Corp? A free-spirited construction contractor following his bliss? We may never know.

Herb Tea Making & Herb Drying Demo
At 4 pm and 6 pm Learn how to make tasty herbals tisanes (teas) from from fresh herbs from the garden and learn about the healing properties of several common garden herbs. Learn also how to effectively dry and store herbs for future use. Taught by Gananathamritananda Swami from Shakambhari Devi Herbs. Manager’s Note: Gananatha regularly offers samples of his tisanes.

WBCH is really pleased to partner once again with HandsOn Greater Richmond to provide one of the 5 days of site-specific activities for their TeenImpact summer program. 10 kids will spend Tuesday morning in our Library with Stacy Luks of SloFood RVA and then help set up the market, visit with vendors, tour the farmlet with Matthew and learn about WBCH Food Pantry and Farmlet processes. Later they’ll do a scavenger hunt and shop the market!

Bill and Joyce Heath have provided a wide variety of sustainably-, locally-, and family-grown vegetables and plants since Byrd House Market began in 2007. I must be in pepper mode because following the Padron Pepper sear of the week before this last week I took the bag of green, yellow and orange bell peppers and decided that every meal would incorporate one or more of the colors and sweet, crunchy goodness from these peppers. So far
– a salad of greens, sweet orange peppers with shaved sharp cheddar cheese and a simple olive oil, squeeze of fresh lime, salt & pepper dressing, and
– a saute of green peppers, crimini mushrooms, onions, garlic laid over fried eggs and garnished with cherry tomatoes!

Pickled Silly joined us last week and added to our fabulous mix a really bright and delicious Bloody Mary Mix. Now, add Spicy Okra, Dilly Green Beans and Tarragon Carrots and, well, just imagine the pairings, eh? Wandering Cow Farm and St. Andrew’s Church return this week.
Jack Tabby Plays Viola – Will E. Nelson will be providing entertainment for the Byrd House Market by presenting a series of musicians through the Blue Lotus Collective. This week it’s Jack Tabby, viola playin’ member of MH & His Orchestra. This collective promotes up-and-coming songwriters and bands by acting as a talent agent and publicist. Solo performers as well as bands will be sharing their music at the market. Be sure to catch a new artist every week starting at 3:30 p.m. Improve your farmer’s market experience with live and local music!
Make art with VACLAA’s Eva and Spencer in the shade of the community garden. Relax and enjoy a nosh. Meet friends, plan your shopping, …etc.

As Garnish or Appetizer, Seared Poblano Peppers are a treat. Got a bag of perfect looking green peppers from Amy and followed her directions to the letter – heavy bottomed skillet, a little oil, blistered the peppers on all sides, sprinkled liberally with good quality salt and ate them with a cold drink and grilled good quality beef hot dogs with chopped fresh tomatoes, chow chow and roasted potatoes!! I know it’s been hot, but this meal worked! yum.

The Scavenged Haiku – Last week, Woodlake United Methodist Church youth volunteers worked in the farmlet, collect stock for the food pantry and find material to create their own haiku poems in the titles of books in the Grace Arents Library. And we got a little play because I remembered a favorite childhood book that was included in a children’s Book Review in the daily paper this weekend!

OHNA Meeting Tomorrow Night

The Oregon Hill Neighborhood Association (OHNA) will be holding its monthly meeting at 7 PM at the William Byrd Community House.

Afterwards, at 8 PM, Jack Berry, the Director of Venture Richmond, will give a short presentation on the latest plans for the proposed amphitheater below Oregon Hill beside the historic canal. This amphitheater could potentially have a large impact on the neighborhood.
Some of the previous issues raised about the amphitheater include:

Will the historic canal be damaged?
Will the number of performances at that venue be limited?
What about the noise level?
What about parking?
