Pescados Art 180 Benefit Monday

I mentioned it before, but it was requested that I do it again:

Pescados China Street (that’s the Oregon Hill location) is showing a little love themselves and donating a percentage of sales to ART 180, a local non profit that provides after-school programs in creative expression to children living in challenging circumstances, giving them a voice through art! So grab a couple of coworkers or guy/gal pals for a lovely lunch, or take your honey or your best friend or your buddy to dinner. You’ll surely enjoy Pescados’ creative, seafood-oriented mix of Caribbean and Latin flavors, with fish that arrive daily. ART 180 will receive part of the proceeds from lunch, dinner, and even gift certificate or T-shirt purchases.

This Monday, stop by 626 China Street for lunch 11:30-2 or dinner 5-10 p.m. Visit their website to preview the menu, but make sure to check out the specials when you’re there.
For more information on ART 180, what they do and who they serve, or to donate personally, visit www.art180.org

Profile of Worthless Junk

Excerpt from profile of Worthless Junk record label on the HornRVA site:

Worthless Junk couldn’t be more of a labor of love. With most of the acts consolidated right here in Richmond (as opposed to nationally, in the case of Valiant Death), the label can see the byproduct of their endeavors first-hand, be it on a Friday night at The Camel, or hearing a WJ-act namedropped in conversation.

“It’s really great, because I can print posters and what not in-house,” Bucky mentions about his Oregon Hill home-base, ”Plus, if for whatever reason we need to meet about something, we can sit down right here and just do it. No frills, no bullshit. It’s a lot more comfortable. Every day I’m getting an email from a different band wanting to know how they can get on board with the label. The whole thing has been really fulfilling.”

Sustainability Community Workshop This Evening

From City press release (originally released last week):

Richmond, VA – As part of the process to develop and implement Richmond’s Sustainability Plan, RVA Green: A Roadmap to Sustainability, Mayor Dwight C. Jones will host a public workshop to share the draft sustainability plan and gain community input for action steps and resident participation in plan implementation. The workshop will be held:

Thursday, February 16, 2012
5:00 – 6:30 p.m.
Richmond Police Training Academy, 1202 West Graham Road
Registration and light refreshments begin at 4:30 p.m.

The Sustainability Plan is part of Mayor Jones’ Green Richmond Initiative created to support the City’s sustainability goals. Those goals are to improve the quality of life for residents, create a healthy environment and enhance economic opportunity in the city of Richmond. During the workshop, the City will share the draft Sustainability Plan and provide opportunity for community input to develop action steps for resident involvement in the implementation of the plan.

Once the community begins implementing the plan, the City will use metrics to report annual progress and assess future sustainability efforts for City government and the community.

Those planning to attend who require assistance or special accommodations are asked to please contact Ashley Gresch at agresch@vhb.com or (804) 343-7100. Please make request by February 13, 2012 to allow time to arrange the accommodations.

The planning process is fully funded by the US Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant program.

St. Andrew’s School Fostering Healthy Hearts

From St. Andrew’s School website:

Help fill our hearts at St. Andrew’s School!

We have set a goal to raise $2,012 in February to support healthy initiatives at our school and need your help to make this happen.
We have raised $375 toward our goal of $2012!

It is our commitment to foster healthy hearts, bodies and minds since academic potential is not optimal if our students come to school hungry and are not healthy. Some of the staggering statistics in our area are:

-35% of children in the Richmond Metro Area live in poverty.
-9% of Virginia’s households are “food insecure,” which means they lack access to enough food to fully meet basic needs.
-34% of children are not meeting daily recommended physical activity targets.
-Only 4% of young people in Richmond meet the USDA recommendation of nine servings of fruits and vegetables per day

We have set a goal to raise $2,012 in the next 29 days and need your help to make this happen. Your support will promote wellness and healthy living by:

-providing our students a balanced, nutritious meal at no cost to our families.
-integrating healthy lifestyle elements into our curriculum.
-ensuring our families can provide food in the home by maintaining a food pantry.
-organizing family workshops on nutritious cooking and food budgeting.
-participating in the backpack program which sends food home with students each weekend.
-teaching the importance of fitness through physical education classes.

St. Andrew’s School fosters healthy hearts by educating the whole child through instilling healthy choices.

Strong Spirit of Rev. Charles R. Smith

Excerpt from Times Dispatch profile:

It was a special Sunday for Smith, who celebrated his 65th anniversary as a preacher. He stood at the front of the church for much of the 100-minute, music-filled service, strumming his Fender Stratocaster and singing with the congregation.

His energy never waned, and rarely did he sit down. He sang a duet with his wife of 44 years, Judy, and also sang solo.

Church member J.D. Burge said it’s important to celebrate “all the years (Smith) has given to the Lord.” Burge travels 24 miles from Hanover County to attend The Full Gospel Tabernacle each week because, he said, “the spirit of God fills the church.”

Much of that can be attributed to Smith, who is the son of a Blackfoot Indian father and an Irish mother. He grew up on Oregon Hill and as a 15-year-old led worship services in Monroe Park and headlined a two-week revival at Calvary Pentecostal Tabernacle on Hull Street that lasted a full year.

“You have to either learn how to preach under those circumstances or forget it,” he said.

Smith’s career in ministry led him to preach in 16 foreign countries, most extensively in the Philippines.
