Qatar is an Arab Middle Eastern emerite that has a VCU satellite campus.
I am not sure if it is really open to non-students, but it will “involve students from Qatar hosting a series of activities on the Plaza for Richmond VCU students to experience. There will be food, a live camel, henna tattoos among other fun and exciting activities.”
Hopefully this is a good precursor to the VCU Intercultural Festival. Regardless, they picked a beautiful day for it. Don’t spook the camel.

After the taco contest, I guess the food polls keep on coming on RIchmond.com, with one for the Best Burger. 821 Cafe is in the running and here is what Richmond.com had to say:
You might not think of the VCU hipster hang-out as a great spot for burgers, but their burgers are really tasty. 821 serves up a great 1/2-pound burger ($6.25) or you can upgrade to the full pound burger ($9) for a double dose. They even have a Brent Burger, $12, a one-pound patty served between two grilled cheeses. Wowza.
Despite the ‘VCU hipster’ comment, I guess it might be worthwhile to make 821 happy to vote for them. (keep in mind that Media General owns the Times Dispatch, Richmond.com, and Gotcha!).
Some of my neighbors put out their recycling out on the sidewalk last Wednesday, but in fact, recycling gets collected every other Wednesday, and tomorrow is considered a ‘Red Wednesday’ for collection. Please click here for more information.
The confusion is somewhat understandable, but when the recycling is left out, it collects non-recyclable trash and a lot of stuff blows all over the place with wind, so please do not leave recycling out on the sidewalk all week in the future.
There will probably be a lot of phone books in this week’s bins, since new ones were delivered in the last two weeks.
The Oregon Hill Neighborhood Association (OHNA) meets every fourth Tuesday at 7 pm at the William Byrd Community House. That’s this Tuesday, the 22nd.

MPACT is designed to deliver results to high priority citizen requests and to highlight pressing issues of community members. These monthly meetings provide a chance for citizens to hear what requests have been handled and to dialogue with the City Leadership on neighborhood concerns.
The February meeting will cover the issues presented at previous meetings, and will include presentations on Community Gardens by Dr. Carolyn Graham, DCAO for Human Services and on Water Utility Rates from Robert Steidel, Acting Director for Public Utilities.

That’s all it takes, and it could be worth up to $1,000 in a video-making contest going on now through March 1, 2011.
Anyone enrolled in a Virginia high school can enter. Create a 60-second to 2-minute video showing ways to reuse and recycle the free plastic bags like you find in a grocery store. Then go to www.abagslife.com/va and submit your video. Contest rules are also on the site.
There’s a prize for First ($1000), Second ($500) and Third ($300) place in two categories — Reuse and Recycle.

Actually farmers markets and communal gardening are probably the norm in most of the rest of the world. Leave it to the US to think we’re “discovering” something!!! My trip to Mali was a wonderful five week sojourn to new experiences, warm friendships and plans. I look forward to sharing what I learned with anyone who is interested.

A lot of people come to Oregon Hill’s Mamma Zu for its Italian cuisine, but this week there are a couple of benefit dinners elsewhere to enjoy also.
One is the previously mentioned William Byrd Community House spaghetti dinner at Perly’s on Thursday, Feb. 17.
