Cooking as a 2nd Language (aka CSL) #8
will feature the cuisine of the U. K. (or Britain or England or The Empire – so many names!)
AND The Three Osdenes: Mrs. Osdene, aka Candy – Osdene Shapiro, aka Clare – Osdene Sallade, aka Joey

Singing: “Be Aware: This Pudding’s Made with BEEF SUET” (so vegans and vegetarians take note and save this one for your carnivorous friends). But isn’t your curiosity getting the better of you? When I used to watch “Upstairs Downstairs” on the BBC in the 1970s (yes, really), I was always facinated by the PUDDINGS that didn’t looking like puddings???

Again just a tiny handful of seats are left and if you had any plans for learning how to make this wildly traditional English taste treat for your upcoming holiday hordes, you won’t want to miss CSL#8 at William Byrd Community House. $10 per person – Call me to reserve your spot.

Pakistan Flood Relief Banquet, This Friday at VCU

From announcement:

The United Nations has declared that the number of individuals affected by the catastrophic flooding in Pakistan during the summer months earlier this year exceeds the combined total of those affected by the 2004 Tsunami, the 2005 Kashmir earthquake and the 2010 Haiti earthquake. In light of this, a fundraiser will be held in the VCU Commonwealth Ballrooms A & B, located in the Student Commons (907 Floyd Ave. Richmond, VA) on Friday, November 12th from 7 pm to 9 pm. Tickets cost $15 and MUST be purchased in advance from Breakpoint, located in the basement of the VCU Student Commons building on 907 Floyd Ave. Tickets are also available at the Islamic Center of Virginia on 1241 Buford Road, Richmond, VA 23225. No tickets at the door. Guest speakers will be present throughout the evening to discuss topics relevant to the current conditions in Pakistan. The menu consists of appetizer, main dish (veggie or meat option) and dessert, catered from Kabob Grille.

Golden Hammer Nominees

There are two nominee projects in the neighborhood for the A.C.O.R.N. 2010 Golden Hammer Awards.

The Alliance to Conserve Old Richmond Neighborhoods initiated the Golden Hammer Awards in 2000 to thank and recognize those who had rehabilitated blighted properties in Richmond’s oldest and most neglected communities, bringing new life to the individual buildings– thereby promoting the revitalization of their surroundings. As improvements were made, the results inspired others; and the number of renovations increased until it was great enough to bring several neighborhoods back from total decay.
