‘The Promised Land’ at Main Street RPL Tomorrow Night

Tomorrow night, downtown will be abuzz with First Friday/holiday celebrations. One event that might be of interest is a documentary screening at the Main Richmond Public Library at 6:30 pm, The Promise Land: The Story of Pocahontas Island. It tells the true story of one of if not the oldest free African American communities in the United States, as well as the life of the Island’s caretaker, Mr. Richard Stewart.

Pocahontas Island is down in Petersburg. It’s an interesting, historic enclave, something that Oregon Hill knows about. And some people may not know that Oregon Hill has a bit of ‘free African American’ history as well.

Author Talk At Library Tomorrow: Climate of Capitulation

Vivian E. Thomson’s “Climate of Capitulation: An Insider’s Account of State Power in a Coal Nation” looks at environmental policy making at the state level and offers a comprehensive analysis of the often entrenched biases toward coal and electric utilities in states’ air pollution policies.

Vivian E. Thomson is former Professor of Environmental Policy at the University of Virginia, where she also directed the Environmental Thought and Practice BA Program. She has been an air pollution policymaker at the US EPA and in Virginia. She was also a Fulbright Professor of American Studies in Denmark.

Books will be available for sale at this event, but attendees may also bring pre-purchased copies to be signed.

This event is sponsored by the Virginia Chapter of the Sierra Club.

Doing a stay-cation on Labor Day weekend? Join us as we travel, cook and eat with Xiamin Wu, our guest chef from China, for Cooking as a Second Language! Next Sunday, Sept. 3, 11-1. This is my favorite collaborative program of RPL and @richmondhostel. Xiaomin(Showme) was a student with the VCU Global Studies program when I met her 5 years ago, I’m thrilled to catch up with her again! Join us as we learn how to make dumplings and hear her stories about cooking, family recipes and culture! What a great way to meet and engage with our diverse community. Urban Lit Fest ’17

One thing easy to love about Richmond is its rich, independent, literary life. There is a wide spectrum, from this neighborhood and all over, well-known and not so-well-known.

Tomorrow, help celebrate that at the Main Richmond Public Library downtown for Urban Lit Fest ’17. The Richmond Public Library will be hosting their second annual celebration of Richmond’s independent authors.

Meet 50 authors, find the latest, greatest locally grown urban fiction, poetry, and memoir. Enjoy readings, discussions, and find out how to “make it” as a self-published author.

Library Goes Hoopla

Richmond Public Libraries Connects with Digital Media Service Hoopla

Richmond, VA – Earlier this month, Richmond Public Libraries (RPL) connected with digital media service provider Hoopla in order to make more content available to city residents. Hoopla currently offers about 600,000 items on its website, allowing visitors to instantly borrow digital movies, TV shows, music, audiobooks, eBooks and more 24/7 using their library card. With new content being added daily, and no waiting, titles can be streamed immediately or downloaded.

“Today’s technology driven culture expects instant access to their favorite artists, shows and movies,” said Mayor Levar M. Stoney. “It is great to see Richmond Public Libraries implementing new services to provide more options for our residents to stay connected.”

Library card holders will be able to borrow up to four times a month from Hoopla without charge.

“Richmond Public Libraries is proud to offer content beyond the walls of the library and make your library card even more powerful,” said RPL Director Scott Firestine. “This will be invaluable to families as they are now able to instantly stream iconic TV shows like Sesame Street to smartphones, tablets and computers through Hoopla’s multi-format experience.”
