Vinyl Conflict To Release New Album By Local Hip Hop Artist

RVA Magazine has an interesting article about how the Vinyl Conflict store is expanding its in-house label offerings to include hip hop.

Excerpt:

Vinyl Conflict record shop has announced that Nickelus F’s new album, Stuck, will be released on the shop’s locals-only label, Vinyl Conflict Records, later this summer with an edition of 500 copies. The album was originally released on AGM on May 11 as a digital-only release.

Vinyl Conflict is known throughout the region for its selection of punk, metal, and hardcore records. Bobby Egger, owner and operator of Vinyl Conflict, started the locals-only imprint almost a decade ago to showcase punk and hardcore groups from Richmond. Nickelus F will be the first hip-hop artist on the label.

“We went through some really really dark times out here,” said Nickelus F. “I think we’re raising the integrity of the art that comes out from the city when it comes to hip hop artists.”

Egger is excited for the upcoming release Vinyl Conflict records, and has several other hip hop releases planned for the near future. He was surprised to learn that Nickelus F was dialed into the punk scene well before they agreed to do the record, and that his favorite local metal band is Cough.

Percussive Friday

Laurel Street neighbor Tommy Birchett is hosting a show this Friday at the Black Iris, over on Broad Street.

From the venue’s website and Bandcamp.com:

When Tommy is not taking out the trash in Oregon Hill, he can be found manipulating sounds with homemade instruments, discarded technology, and electronic toys.

Tommy has opened several times for his friend and fellow musician Tatsuya Nakatani, a Japanese avant-garde sound artist and master percussionist who has released over 80 recordings and tours internationally.

Thales Piano Trio at RPL’s Gellman Room Saturday

Concert is happening this Saturday at 2 pm in the Gellman Room at the Main branch of the Richmond Public Library.

From the FaceBook event page:

The Thales Piano Trio is proud to present music written by three women from three different countries and eras: Jennifer Higdon, Rebecca Clarke, and Clara Schumann.

This concert is FREE and open to the public!

Thales Piano Trio
Ellen Cockerham Riccio, violin
Sara Bennett Wolfe, cello
Daniel Stipe, piano

The Thales Piano Trio has performed as part of concert series’ across the Eastern seaboard, at venues including Washington College in Chestertown MD, Trinity Lutheran Church in Richmond VA, and St. Paul’s on the Green in Norwalk CT. In addition, they have presented house concerts at numerous private residences.

Now in their second season as an ensemble, the Thales Piano Trio is the product of more than a decade of musical collaboration between Ellen, Sara, and Daniel in all possible duo combinations: Ellen and Sara won a fellowship to study and perform as half of the Heiligenstadt Quartet at the Brevard Music Center; Sara and Daniel performed sonata repertoire together at Princeton University Chapel; since meeting in 2013, Daniel and Ellen have shared the stage frequently, including as part of the Belz-Parker Artists Ascending Concert Series in Memphis and the Forest Hill Recital Series in Richmond. The trio is named for the famous mathematician Thales (THAY-lees) of Miletus. Thales’ theorem states: If A, B and C are points on a circle where the line AC is a diameter of the circle, then the angle ∠ABC is a right angle. The musicians are thrilled to be “completing the triangle” by joining together to form a trio; as such they found Thales’ name particularly appropriate.
