Bike Accident, But Not In Oregon Hill

Earlier today, a vehicle hit a bicyclist at or near the corner of S. 4th Street and Canal. I do not have much info on the accident, other than to say I saw the reporting go past on the City’s Current Incident site. It said that the bicyclist was bleeding from the mouth.

The location is not in the neighborhood, but since this falls in nearby downtown in a sort of grey area where I do not know of any current community blog coverage, I figured I would bring some attention to it here. I do not know who is at fault, but it concerns me nonetheless. Hopefully, the Mayor’s new committee on pedestrian and bicycles will eventually weigh in on possibly how to prevent. Ride/drive safe, the life you save maybe your own.

This past week Pescados opened its doors for business at the corner of S. Pine Street and China Street, which previously hosted the Hollywood Grill and before that, the Chuck Wagon. With the help of contractor Bob WIndsor, the venue has been renovated and freshened with bright colors and murals.

This is in addition to their Midlothian Turnpike restaurant.
Known for their ‘Latin/Caribbean Inspired Seafood”, Pescado’s will certainly add another flavor to Pine Street, already famous for Mamma Zu’s.

Because of its relatively small size, you may want to call ahead if you plan to eat there to check on table availability- 804.644.FISH

Flying Brick Shows Burial Ground Documentary Saturday

This coming Saturday night, the Flying Brick is inviting folks over at 8 pm for a free showing of the documentary video, “Meet Me In The Bottom”, which is about the controversy with Virginia Commonwealth University over slave history and the burial ground in Shockoe Bottom. Of course, Oregon Hill has had past controversy in the same vein.

Here’s a short blurb about the documentary:

The Burial Ground for Negroes (ca. 1750-1816) is located north of Broad Street, between 15th and 16th Streets. It is the oldest municipal cemetery for enslaved and free Blacks known to exist in the Richmond area. An 1810 map shows the Negro Burial Ground near Broad Street and Shockoe Creek. Today the Burial Ground for Negroes sits adjacent to a parking lot owned by Virginia Commonwealth University. In fact, there are questions as to whether the Burial Ground lies beneath the parking lot. Activist and other groups have protested what is seen by many as a desecration of sacred ground. This documentary tells the story of the community’s efforts to reclaim the Burial Ground as the final resting place of their ancestors.
