Trash/Recycling Pickup Tomorrow

This Wednesday is a red Wednesday, which means trash and recycling pickup. Please make sure you pick up containers after pickup tomorrow night. They do not belong on the sidewalk after tomorrow night.

In order to take your recycling to the next level, read this: 10 ways to improve your recycling.

Recent polling indicates that there needs to be more awareness about plastics recycling. Click here to read what the Central Virginia Waste Management Authority says about plastics. (Personally, my attitude is, when in doubt, put it in the bin and see if they will accept it anyway- they need to.)

Lastly, and very much related to recycling, don’t forget about the neighborhood yard sale coming up on August 16th!

Obituary for Wilton Journey

From the Times Dispatch obituary:

JOURNEY, Wilton “Earl,” 89, of Shackleford, formerly of Richmond, passed away peacefully on July 28, 2014, at the home of his son. Earl was the son of the late Lottie Virginia and Clarence Churchill Journey. He was raised in Oregon Hill. He proudly enjoyed telling tales of his youth there. He was a WWII Navy veteran.

He was a member of the Carpenters Union 388 and retired from Koger Properties. He was instrumental in the construction of several landmark buildings in the Richmond area including, Richmond City Hall, the Coliseum and Imperial Plaza.

Interment to follow in Oakwood Cemetery.

Thanks, Project Clean Move!

A big thank you to the folks who worked on yesterday’s Oregon Hill cleanup as part of Project Clean Move, including VCU’s Tito Luna (who took the photo below), Clean City Commission’s Jane Hotchkiss, and neighbor Jimmy Blackford, who lead the Oregon Hill effort, the City trash truck workers and volunteers. A big NO thank you to the people who dumped their trash on the streets and sidewalks, and their landlords. We will see more code enforcement in the future. While VCU has stepped up with Project Clean and Green Move, residents need to report this illegal dumping activity with details about the offenders. More than 7 tons of debris was collected yesterday and the dumping is a serious burden on the City’s budget.
