It took me a moment to register it, but I like the theme on the flyer:

Here’s the website for info.
I am looking forward to hearing former Laurel Street neighbor Tim Barry play at Fine Foods on Saturday.

From Byrd Market Manager Ana Edwards:
It’s mid August and the flavors are at their peak! You know me, I’m perfectly happy to drool as I draft a long, long list of the delicious foods available at our market on a weekly basis. I just made my first quiche (really my first, and really yummy, and REALLY EASY) this weekend and all I could think was how I couldn’t wait for Tuesday to start experimenting with all the good ingredients at my fingertips. How about you? Tried a new recipe this summer?
The SPCA will be with us this week as well as the 3rd Tuesday Jam with Epic Gardens’ own Patricia Stansbury.
Madyun’s Jewelry and A Rose Above Pastries observe the Muslim tradition of fasting for the month of Ramadan, so they’ll take a break from the heat of the market day at this time and rejoin us mid September. Also away: Fertile Crescent, A Wise Gardener, Manakintowne Specialty Growers.
However, joining us this week will be Boka Truck (with Noodles!) and on 8/24 Jill Parker Designs will bring back her groovy glasswork jewelry.
See you at the Market!

RVA Construction is doing some repair work for Hollywood Cemetery. They are stabilizing the 1899 Chapel Addition which has shown some significant settlement, mainly within the past few years. The project entails underpinning the foundations, repairing the affected roof structure and re-building the porch roof system. They have started this week and expect to have the work done within 3 months. Road access into the facility will be cut down to one lane and public restrooms will be closed, but no major interruption of the facility will take place.
With the real estate market in increasing trouble, the Oregon Hill Home Improvement Council (OHHIC) has dismissed previous development plans. The lots reportedly have new water and sewer service, as well as a partially installed storm water system and a recorded easement. For more info, call Allen Townsend of Metro Properties (804 437 1991).
The relatively new Pescados restaurant on China Street will start its lunch shift tomorrow, according to its Facebook page. It will be from 11 am to 2 pm, Monday through Saturday. Pescados’ menu specializes in top shelf, fresh caught, Caribbean inspired seafood.
There was most likely quite a bit of ideological rivalry on the Hill back in day (just like now?). I wonder just how serious it became (a la Gangs of New York, perhaps?). Of course, the conservatives were likely the Democrats back then, and the Republicans were probably considered ‘the liberals’ (and certainly not ‘the radical right’ you see now with the likes of G.W. “I am the decider” Bush and Palin, (‘Goin’ rogue, you know’).
From the Daily Dispatch, August 7, 1880:
A meeting of the Conservatives of Oregon Hill is announced for to-night, at which Captain George D. Wise, Hon. A.M. Keiley, and S.B. Witt, Esq. are expected to speak.
OHHIC (not OHNA!) will be holding its monthly board meeting Tuesday,
August 3rd at the Jacob House at 619 W. Cary St. at 7 PM.
The board will be setting a date and discussing the agenda for the annual meeting for the membership.
Obituary:
Michael Anthony “Mad Dog” Brown died on July 27, 2010 at his Oregon Hill home in Richmond, Virginia. Born September 21, 1958 in Ohio, he was preceded in death by his parents and a son and is survived by a daughter and siblings. Quick to tell a story or share a laugh, he enjoyed blue grass music and living simply.
Visitation will be held at the SynerGeo building located at 349 South Laurel Street on Wednesday, August 4 from 5-7pm. A burial service will be held at Riverview Cemetery on Thursday, August 5 at 1:00pm with a reception following at Pine Street Baptist Church.
Much gratitude is extended to Angelus Funeral Home, Ms. Lewis, the Medi Hospice team and the Oregon Hill community. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to SynerGeo or the Oregon Hill Baptist Center food pantry.
