“Grief” is one of the most notable pieces of sculpture at Hollywood. It was made by Richmond sculptor Edward V. Valentine and is located in Presidents Circle on the tomb of William Worthington.

News For Oregon Hill, in Richmond, VA
I don’t know why she is referred to as the angel. It is Alice Worthington Haxall, mother of William , for whom she is deeply grieving. He was her only child. She was the great aunt of my grandmother, Alice Haxall Carpender Hall, born in Richmond in 1876 to Alice Brown and Charles J Carpender.
Alice Brown Worthington had one son, William. When she married William Henry Haxall, he adopted that son. They had no issue from their marriage.
