Trash/Recycling Pickup Tomorrow

This Wednesday is a red Wednesday, which means trash and recycling pickup. Ideally, rolling recycling containers are stored and deployed in the back alleys along with trash cans. Please make sure you pick up containers after pickup tomorrow night.

If you have not done so already, don’t forget to sign up for your Recycling Perks.

In sad news, Recycle the Clown died.

Mr. Seidel, a 73-year-old Midlothian resident, died May 7 the way he wanted to go, without machines or drugs.
He was the first individual in Chesterfield County to adopt a road to keep clean when the Adopt-A-Road program began. Because of his interest in recycling, he chose “Recycle” as his clown name when he began clowning in the 1980s.
At first, everything about his costume was recycled, said Paula “Petunia” Ward, a fellow member of Clown Alley 3. “Most of the stuff he bought at yard sales and thrift stores, like a gold foil top hat and his first pair of pants — bright golf pants, the kind you only would wear on the golf course.
“He carried a plunger and would use it like a drum major with a baton. He had a big cow bell that on several occasions we had to take away from him so he would not, for instance, take it in church for the wedding of two of our clowns.”
Later, he acquired a more polished wardrobe. His trademark props were a chartreuse green wig and a big horn. While he sculpted balloons into different shapes, he’d talk to children about the importance of recycling.

Futon

From Craigslist ad:

00s0s_2OnlUc8kwkv_1200x900

This futon served me well for the past two years, but I’m getting married so it’s time to say goodbye to my bachelor pad furniture! I kept him under a loft bed (queen, also for sale), so the dimensions work perfectly for small spaces. He was $150 new (see link to the retail site below). The texture of the futon is great and he unfolds into a twin sized bed. No tears, stains, smells, or holes on the futon’s fabric. I’m reducing the price mostly because I had to repair one of the back legs and I didn’t re-attach the fabric on the underside of the futon (see pictures). I’m gonna miss it, but gotta make space! Feel free to contact for more information.

Times Dispatch Reports Folk Festival Line Up

From Times Dispatch article:

“Our local programming committee has outdone themselves, once again,” said festival director Lisa Sims in a statement. “Dancers from Sri Lanka, zydeco players from Louisiana, virtuosic musicians from Afghanistan, gospel singers from Tennessee and dozens of others will all offer free performances within a half-mile of each other. There’s really nothing else like it in the Virginia.”

Last year, a record-breaking 200,000-plus people attended the festival, up 50,000 from a rainy 2014.

Quick editorial: Hopefully Venture Richmond can become a better neighbor and we can all enjoy it this year as in years past. Still waiting for more agreement to neighborhood’s reasonable requests.

There are also still outstanding questions about how this important, historic area of the riverfront will be recognized and preserved in the future.

VCU Warns About Upcoming Traffic

From VCU press release:

RICHMOND, Va. (June 1, 2016) – The Virginia Commonwealth University Police Department expects an increase in traffic near VCU’s Monroe Park Campus and around the Stuart C. Siegel Center during high school graduation ceremonies starting Tuesday, June 7. Twenty-seven high schools from Richmond and Chesterfield, Hanover, Henrico and New Kent counties and a technical school will host ceremonies at the Siegel Center between June 7 and June 18.

Graduating students and their guests are advised to arrive early at the Siegel Center. Attendance for the ceremonies is expected to range from 2,500 to more than 6,000. In anticipation of these events, VCU Police, VCU Parking and Transportation, the City of Richmond Transportation Engineering Division and the Richmond Police Department have established a regional traffic plan and have added staffing.

Law enforcement officers will be directing traffic around the Siegel Center before and after each graduation. Guests with mobility impairment can be dropped off in front of the Siegel Center on Broad Street, near the intersection of Broad and North Harrison streets.

“Our goal is to keep drivers and pedestrians moving as quickly and safely as possible through the area,” said VCU Police Capt. Sean Ingram. “Drivers in Richmond may want to consider alternate routes to avoid heavy traffic before and after the ceremonies. We appreciate the public’s patience during one of the busiest times of year at the Siegel Center.”

Attendees with blue or red parking passes, issued by area schools, can park in either the West Broad Street Parking Deck at 1111 W. Broad St. or at the Bowe Street Parking Deck at 601 Bowe St. The Siegel Center is located at 1200 W. Broad St.

St. Andrew’s School Dedicates New Library

From WRIC:

A former teacher at several area schools will live on through the Little Free Library at St. Andrew’s School.

A ceremony on Tuesday, May 24 dedicated it to Elizabeth (Betty) Chambers George.

George taught at schools including Mary Mumford and Binford Middle. She died at the age of 95, leaving a legacy of her love of reading as well as money earmarked for literacy causes.

Members of the Richmond Alumnae Club of Pi Beta Phi, of which George was a member, donated the Little Free Library.

St. Andrew’s School is an independent elementary school in Richmond’s Oregon Hill neighborhood. It was founded by Richmond philanthropist and social reformer Grace Arents in 1894, specifically for families with low incomes.

Best Italian

Congratulations to Oregon Hill neighbor Ed Vasai. Two of his restaurants, Edo’s Squid and Mamma Zu’s (which is in Oregon Hill), were at the top of the Best Italian Restaurant category in Style Magazine’s annual Best of Richmond issue.

Says Style:

Both Edo’s Squid and Mamma ‘Zu are owned by Ed Vasaio, and you could say that the restaurants are two sides of the same coin. Edo’s is the natty modern younger brother, while Mamma ‘Zu isn’t comfortable out of its jeans and flannel shirt.
