Renegade Market- Shop the Wild Bunch!

From Byrd House Market post:

Did you see the flames last week?
The pizza oven fired up?
The spring rolls and noodles steaming?

Did you stock up on apples?
And sweet potatoes?
And winter greens?
and broccoli?

the butter, the cookies, the honey
the jam?
the chickens, the pork chops, the stewing beef
the wings?

Fido’s marrow bones,
Fifi’s gizzard jerks
Your knitting yarn
His butter salt, her butter sweet

the succulent
the tangy
the creme de la cream
the tops in your stop

at Byrd House RENEGADE Market
3pm til dark
Tuesdays through April

He pleased into the spirit land, 1862

From The Daily Dispatch: November 7, 1862:

Died
On the 6th inst, after an illness of eleven weeks, from injuries received on the railroad, Charles Walter, youngest son of George and Emily C. Green, aged 7 years5 months and 7 days. He leaves an affectionate mother, one brother and sister, and a great many relatives and friends to mourn their loss. May he rest in peace!

When the bloom of health was on his check,
The light of hope illumined his eye,
He seemed as destined long to live–
Too bright and beautiful to die.
But the relentless spoiler came,
And touched him with his blighting hand;
And, like a bird from prison freed,
He pleased into the spirit land.

His funeral will take place from the Oregon Hill Baptist Chapel, at 3 o’clock this evening. The friends and acquaintances of the family are invited to attend without further notice.

Vote On Tuesday

Voting now in the 10th District, on Tuesday Oregon Hill will help decide between challenger David Bernard and incumbent John Watkins for State Senate. James River Maven offers more information on this race, with a provocative post entitled “Who Owns John Watkins”.

Although there has been some talk of moving the voting place for the precinct, it will remain at the Landmark Theater. For more voter information, contact the Virginia State Board of Elections. See you at the polls this Tuesday.

Stormwater Letter

Despite the lack of response to an earlier post, there is this from the City:

Dear Oregon Hill Neighborhood Association,

The City of Richmond Stormwater Utility is actively trying to join forces with neighborhood associations throughout the City in order to educate our community about illegal or illicit discharges to storm drains which often connect directly to local waterways and ultimately, the Chesapeake Bay.

An illegal discharge is defined as any discharge into a storm drain system that is not composed entirely of stormwater or uncontaminated ground water. Sources of illegal discharges can be spills or dumping of lawn or garden chemicals, pet waste, vehicle fluids, leaky vehicles or machinery, leaking gas and oil tanks, leaking sanitary sewer lines, failing septic systems, floor drains and basement sumps.

We are hoping to submit a short piece for inclusion in your newsletter and/or website that discusses illegal discharges and the effect they have on local waterways. If you are interested, please let us know the format that works best for you and the approximate number of people your civic association serves.

The City of Richmond is committed to being environmentally responsible and hopes to work with your group on this very important issue.

Sincerely,

John A. Allen

Hollywood Cemetery Continues To Fascinate

The University of Richmond student newspaper, The Collegian, had a story on Hollywood Cemetery this past week, while Blue Ridge Outdoors magazine also featured Hollywood Cemetery in a story on popular ‘running cemeteries’ in the the Southeast region:

Paved paths roll through small valleys and over hills in this cemetery with pockets of graves and memorials set amongst trees and shrubs. Hollywood sits on the edge of downtown Richmond, making it a popular run for city dwellers. Several vantage points inside the cemetery overlook the James River. You could stage an entire run within the borders of the 135-acre cemetery.

Famous Residents: James Monroe, our fifth president; John Tyler, our tenth president (famous for vetoing most bills passed by Congress in an attempt to keep federal government small); Lewis Ginter, inventor of the mass-produced cigarette.

Must See: The Pyramid, a 90-foot granite pyramid built in 1869 to commemorate the 18,000 Confederate soldiers buried there.

Ghost Story: The Poole Vampire breaks out of the mausoleum tomb of William Wortham Poole. Also, a cast-iron statue of a dog comes alive and roams the cemetery at night.

Anyway, if you missed the guided tour this morning, there are more coming up.
