Drum Lessons

From announcement:

Hey Oregon Hill! I’m offering drum lessons to beginners of all ages, whether you want to learn academically or just for fun.
I’ve been playing drums and percussion for 13 years. I studied percussion from middle school through to getting my bachelor of music from JMU in 2014. I’ve also played in a progressive rock band called Fight Cloud since 2008 (fightcloud.bandcamp.com).
I’ll focus instruction on technique, rhythm, notation, and learning by ear. Having solid fundamentals will allow you to more freely play whatever you like, whether it be rock drum set, jazz, classical percussion, or drum line.
I would prefer to teach at the student’s home as mine is not ideal for teaching lessons. This also adds the benefit of being able to focus on your needs on your drums in your space.
If you’re interested, I’d love to hear from you, and we can negotiate time and price.
Thank you!
Miles Blunt

Small Richmond is the city’s best local independent news all in one place

sites_map

OregonHill.net and seven other sites are today launching Small Richmond, a new site featuring local independent news in the city.

The eight participating sites cover core Richmond geography and
areas of interest. We are stoked to partner with Church Hill People’s News, Brookland Park Post, Dogtown Dish, Randolph RVA, Richmond Outside, Springhill RVA, and VCU Ram Nation to connect Richmond readers and publishers.

Contact John Murden at murden@gmail.com or (804)564-1360 to suggest a site for inclusion, if you would like to set up a community blog for your area, or for more information.

Oregon Hill On The Tourist Map

Tourist maps are always fun for their distortions as well as their inclusions and exclusions.

The photo below is an excerpt from “The Character of Richmond”, circa 1990, made by Atlantic Graphics. It seems more oriented towards Fan businesses and notably left out all of the Southside. I got it from former Oregon Hill neighbor Greg Wells, who has a booth or two at Mixie’s in Mechanicsville. He has more copies of this map for sale, along with a lot of other cool memorabilia, Richmond and otherwise.

I have seen more recent ones around town that leave Oregon Hill out, showing just the Virginia War Memorial right next to Hollywood Cemetery.

Anyway, this post also gives a little foreshadowing to an announcement coming this Thursday.

The first of our three new James River overlooks is complete! Extensive landscaping will begin this fall.

A special thanks to the James River Garden Club, the Dominion Foundation, Richard S. Reynolds Foundation, and the Bob and Anna Lou Schaberg Fund at the Virginia Nonprofit Housing Coalition for making this new addition possible

Times Dispatch Reports Folk Festival Line Up

From Times Dispatch article:

“Our local programming committee has outdone themselves, once again,” said festival director Lisa Sims in a statement. “Dancers from Sri Lanka, zydeco players from Louisiana, virtuosic musicians from Afghanistan, gospel singers from Tennessee and dozens of others will all offer free performances within a half-mile of each other. There’s really nothing else like it in the Virginia.”

Last year, a record-breaking 200,000-plus people attended the festival, up 50,000 from a rainy 2014.

Quick editorial: Hopefully Venture Richmond can become a better neighbor and we can all enjoy it this year as in years past. Still waiting for more agreement to neighborhood’s reasonable requests.

There are also still outstanding questions about how this important, historic area of the riverfront will be recognized and preserved in the future.

Dominion RiverRock This Weekend Will Come With Protests and Rain

Picture1

Dominion RiverRock Festival is scheduled for this weekend. The local corporate media trumpets this as the nation’s premier outdoor sports and music festival.

But the Virginia Sierra Club, Chesapeake Climate Action Network, and other activists are planning to protest Dominion Power at the event on Saturday evening. They claim that “Dominion is sponsoring events like Riverrock at the same time it is using its political clout to pollute Virginians’ rivers, drinking water, and climate, and rig our democracy against clean energy solutions.”

At the same time, local weather forecasters are talking about a 90% chance of rain on Saturday.
