This Thursday, Richmond Industry – Tredegar and The James River & Kanawha Canal

A Joint Event with the support of the Central Virginia Section of the American Society of Mechanial Enginners (ASME); the American Society of Metals (ASM), the Richmond Joint Engineers Council (RJEC), and the Penninsula Engineers Council (PEC), and the American Civil War Museum.
Several professional mechanical engineering societies have come together to sponser an evening of industrial history in Richmond!
The evening starts with a brief tour of Historic Tredegar, begining at 4:30 PM; attendees are free to explore the grounds until 5:30. The tour will be given by Nathan Vernon Madison, an historical consultant to the museum and co-director of The Richmond Economic History Project, a non-profit organization concerned with researching and digitizing the industrial, economic and infrastructural history of Richmond.
At 6:00 a social, with beverages, snacks, and Bottoms Up Pizza, will be held at VCU’s School of Engineering, with a lecture and presentation begining at 6:45, by Mr. Madison, regarding the history of Tredegar and its machinery, as well as the James River and Kanwaha Canal and the power it brought to the myriad of industries across Richmond in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Clean Up Events Scheduled For Next Week
Pine Street neighbor and Dominion employee Stephenie Harrington has secured a small grant from Dominion Energy to support Oregon Hill neighborhood clean-up events and ongoing efforts to keep the sidewalks and alleys improved. Two dates have been planned so far, September 21 (Dominion volunteers are coming) and September 23 (VCU volunteers are coming). Neighbor Makes This Year’s Folk Festival Poster

Oregon Hill artist Chris Milk Hulburt walks to the Richmond Folk Festival ever year to enjoy the music.
Last year, the beat-boxing showcase brought him to tears.
“Music has been first and foremost in my life,” he said from Quirk Hotel while installing a new one-man show. “If I hadn’t been an artist, I would have preferred to be a musician.”
Hulburt looks like an artist: wearing red suspenders, red Crocs and brown pants rolled at the bottom with the words “True Love,” embroidered by his sweetheart, stitched into the cuffs.
A graduate from Open High School, Hulburt has been making his living as an artist for the past 20 years. This year, he was selected to create the poster for the Richmond Folk Festival, which is Oct. 13-15.
A Festival A Stone’s Throw Away Tomorrow
Tomorrow Stone Brewing is throwing a festival down at Brown’s Island.

Doors open at 12:00pm and show starts at 1:00pm. Craft beer from Stone Brewing & friends will be available for purchase. Folding chairs are allowed.
As for music, besides headliners Lettuce, the bill includes Oregon Hill-based No BS! Brass Band as well as The London Souls and Pontiak.
This is the time of year in Richmond when the amount of festivals really picks up and there’s a lot going on. Don’t forget PrideFest at Brown’s Island on Sept. 23, and of course, the Richmond Folk Festival Oct 13-15.

Solar Eclipse Viewing Party on Brown’s Island Announced

Richmond Riverfront Partners to Host Solar Eclipse Viewing Party on Brown’s Island
RICHMOND, Va.— It’s almost here! On Monday, August 21, Richmonders will have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to view the solar eclipse making its way across North America. The National Park Service in Richmond, American Civil War Museum, James River Park System, and Venture Richmond invite the public to experience this event on Brown’s Island from 1-4 pm. Staff from these riverfront partners will distribute 600 free pairs of NASA-approved Rainbow Symphony solar eclipse viewing eyeglasses beginning at 1 pm, and pop-up tents on site will feature information on the eclipse as well as upcoming programs along the riverfront. Additionally, a limited-edition National Park Service Junior Ranger solar eclipse booklet and badge will be available to 200 children between ages 5 and 14.
“We’re so excited to partner with our friends along the riverfront for this unique event,” said Andrea DeKoter, Chief of Interpretation for Richmond National Battlefield Park and Maggie L. Walker National Historic Site. “I invite the public to join us for a fun – and safe – viewing of the solar eclipse.”

Cathedral Plans Yard Sale For August 26
