Cleanups This Saturday

Two cleanup efforts are happening this Saturday-

First, from Jimmy’s email:

OREGON HILL ALLEY CLEANUP
SATURDAY JULY 11 8-11 am

We will walk thru the alleys to
toss all the discarded furniture into the
trash truck. Come to Pleasants Park (S. Laurel & Albemarle St.) at 8am.

Even if you can only give 30 minutes, we’d love to have you!!

Coming later than 8am?? Call me at 804-335-5808 or simply look in all the alleys til you find us.
If lifting furniture isn’t your thing, we can give you a grabber & bag for you to get the smaller litter.

Seeking anyone who can join the effort. Oregon Hill residents or not. Get some exercise – save on Gym Membership fees!!

If you can join the cleanup THIS SATURDAY, please say so in a reply.

We will be wearing orange T-shirts on the Corner of Cumberland & Cherry
We will be cleaning along Cumberland Street in Oregon Hill. Please bring your water bottle.

All supplies will be provided. Please wear closed toed shoes.

Important Announcement For July 3 Fireworks

From Oregon Hill Neighborhood Association, in regard to fireworks on July 3:

On July 3rd:

At around 5 pm, police officers will be stationed at the following intersections:

Laurel and Idlewood, Holly and Laurel, Holly and Pine.

Because of congestion and traffic from the Downtown Expressway, police decided this year to close Laurel Street at Idlewood to everyone but neighbors and guests.

Those without the password or current proof of address will still be able to access the neighborhood at Spring Street until around 7 pm. At 7 pm, the police will start closing down Belvedere and the Lee Bridge.

The Overlook be closed to all but residents and guests. The Oregon Hill Parkway should be closed at the same time 2nd street is closed. The Lee Bridge ramps will be closed also.

Neighbors can get past the police at any time with the password or identification showing that they reside in the neighborhood.

ASL Tour Of Hollywood Cemetery Thursday

The ASL Walking Tour of Hollywood Cemetery this Thursday will share some interesting facts about Jefferson Davis’ son, Billy, who was hard of hearing and about the Davis’ family connection to renowned deaf artist John Carlin.Dr. Pajka will also be discussing American novelist Ellen Glasgow who communicated largely via writing due to her deafness.

This walking tour will be given in American Sign Language and will not be voice interpreted. The tour will begin at 9:00am. This is a walking tour of approximately two miles, so please dress for weather and walking. We ask that participants make a $15 contribution to Friends of Hollywood Cemetery.

St. Andrew’s Grace Arents Commemoration on June 20

Hollywood Cannon and Belle Island Tour

There will be cannon fire as part of the annual Jefferson Davis birthday ceremony in Hollywood Cemetery on Saturday, June 6th, from 9:00 am to about 11:00 am. The ceremony will include a keynote speaker, Rev. Herman White, Chaplain of the North Carolina Division, SCV, as well as a bag pipe band, rifle squad, artillery salute and wreath laying. The event is free and open to the public. The cannon fire will happen towards the end of the event.

And if you want to know more about that Belle Isle prison camp, there’s a Sensory History Tour of Belle Isle Prison Camp on Saturday, June 6, noon to 2 p.m. This conversational walking tour is sponsored by the Tredegar Society of the American Civil War Museum in partnership with RVA Archaeology. Cherry Street neighbor Jimmy Blackford is recruiting volunteers for next Saturday’s Oregon Hill Alley Cleanup, which is part of VCU’s Project Clean & Green Move. From the MeetUp.com event page:

We’re getting all the big stuff that people have set out in the alleys. We’ll go thru with a city trash truck to collect discarded furniture & large refuse. But if you can help by just getting the small litter, please join. Bring work gloves if you can. Even half an hour of your time would be great. Meeting at Pleasants Park 8am & going thru Oregon Hill alleys.
