HOME Workshop on Foreclosure Recovery

While other parts of the Richmond area have seen lots of foreclosures, Oregon Hill has remained relatively stable. That’s not to say that people are not struggling here and elsewhere. In response…

Housing Opportunities Made Equal (HOME) announces a new group education
opportunity for those recovering from a foreclosure or facing a
foreclosure. The goals of the recovery class are to provide support,
education and resources to help recover financially and personally; to
empower individuals to create for themselves a more secure financial
future; and to find comfort and encouragement in a peer group setting of
other individuals who have also been through this difficult time.

HOME invites anyone who has recently been through or are currently in
the process of a foreclosure to see if this 4-week class is right for
them by attending one of the informational sessions on Tuesday, March 22
at 6:30PM or Thursday, March 24 6:30PM. Individuals must attend one of
these information sessions or contact HOME by phone prior to the first
class on March 29.

Grace Street as Chinatown

One of the benefits of living in Oregon Hill, so near the VCU campus, is the plethora of food choices available. Oh sure, we have good restaurants like Mamma Zu’s, Pescados, and 821 Cafe right in the neighborhood, and Elephant Thai and the chain Chili’s nearby. But only a few more blocks away is what one local artist describes as “Richmond’s Chinatown”, ready to fill student appetites.

I just wish that the Grace Street places would ease up on the “door hanger” flyers (many of which we eventually have to pick up as litter) and start advertising on this and other RVAnews community news sites instead.

Check Your Drains/SeeClickFix

With wet weather coming in the two or three days, it makes sense to take a moment to check your residence’s and street storm drains to make sure they are in operating order.

For example, it looks like dirt and debris from recent storms and street cleaning have blocked this one at the northwest corner of S.Laurel and China streets.

I know there has been some frustration and cynicism with the City’s online Citizen Request process in the past, but I did use the revamped one to report this drain, so let’s see how well it works. It’s worth noting that you can also use the mobile phone app SeeClickFix to report issues to the City now.
