Cleanups This Saturday

Two cleanup efforts are happening this Saturday-

First, from Jimmy’s email:

OREGON HILL ALLEY CLEANUP
SATURDAY JULY 11 8-11 am

We will walk thru the alleys to
toss all the discarded furniture into the
trash truck. Come to Pleasants Park (S. Laurel & Albemarle St.) at 8am.

Even if you can only give 30 minutes, we’d love to have you!!

Coming later than 8am?? Call me at 804-335-5808 or simply look in all the alleys til you find us.
If lifting furniture isn’t your thing, we can give you a grabber & bag for you to get the smaller litter.

Seeking anyone who can join the effort. Oregon Hill residents or not. Get some exercise – save on Gym Membership fees!!

If you can join the cleanup THIS SATURDAY, please say so in a reply.

More coordination for future cleanups is something that is being worked on now.

Oregon Hill’s Firehouse

Oregon Hill suffered tremendous losses in housing and history when the Downtown Expressway‘s construction tore a great scar through the neighborhood in the 1970’s. Among the resources that were lost was the Engine House No. 6 that was formerly at the corner of Cumberland and Laurel. The bell that was in a cupola on the roof of Engine House No. 6 was moved to the replacement firehouse at Canal and Jefferson Streets. These photographs in the collection of the Richmond History Center, show the original firehouse in 1957 and 1895:

City Responsibility

Please note, it has been determined that the City is responsible for snow removal, condition, and maintenance of the 195 bridge overpasses, including pedestrian sidewalks, along Idlewood, Cumberland. Parkwood. No more deceitful ducking of issues by saying that the RMA or VCU is responsible. And if there is any problems with budgeting, I suggest money be cut and repurposed from Vulture Richmond’s “Clean and Safe” program, which currently receives over a quarter of million from the City.

Harrison/Cumberland Intersection Likely Closed Till Monday

From VCU’s LiveSafe app:

VCU has recvd information that Richmond City has plans to repair the water main at Harrison & Cumberland tomorrow morning. The pavement restoration will probably not be completed until next Monday. Harrison Street will remain closed except for the deck patrons until then. Richmond City is working aggressively to have the street open before the Men’s Basketball Game on Tuesday night 01.27/VCU Police

Water Main Break At Cumberland and Harrison Causes Service Issues

From Times Dispatch article:

A 24-inch water main break shut down service to much of the city Monday morning and while pressure has been restored to most customers others may not get things flowing again until Tuesday morning.

Oregon Hill neighbors have reported having water pressure issues. It is unclear how much service has been restored.
