OHNA Meeting Announcement/5th District Candidate Forum/Dangerous Chemical In Monroe Park

OHNA President Todd Woodson sent out an email that announces this coming Tuesday’s Oregon Hill Neighborhood Association (OHNA) meeting. It is very full of additional information, including some information about an upcoming candidate forum for 5th District City Council seat and chemical spraying in Monroe Park.

Good morning Friends and Neighbors

Our monthly OHNA meeting will be this Tuesday August 27th at 7pm at St Andrews.

There are some events coming up that I encourage you to be a part of including 5th District City Council candidate meet and greets and a fundraiser for the 14th Annual Halloween Parade *YES! Its happening again in Oregon Hill this year! Lets make it the coolest ever!:

* Wednesday August 28 Jer’Mykeal McCoy will have a meet and greet at Little Mexico restaurant at 1328 W Cary st 6-8 pm. Refreshments will be served. Please RSVP to: staff@mccoyforrva.com contribution levels go from $25-1000.

* Tuesday, September 10 There will be a meet and greet for Stephanie Lynch at the home of Ruth Twiggs, 329 1/2 S Pine St from 6-7:30. Refreshments will be served and special guest is Ghazala Hashmi, candidate for 10th District State Senator. Please RSVP to Catherine Travers at electstephanielynch@gmail.com

* Thursday, September 12 at 7pm at Patrick Henry Charter School Auditorium there will be a candidates forum for all 8 candidates vying for our 5th District City Council Seat, currently held by Parker Agelasto. This is sponsored by many neighborhood associations including Oregon Hill , Randolph, Woodland Heights, Byrd Park as well as the Sierra Club Falls of the James Chapter. I am doing publicity for this event so will be reminding everybody. Each neighborhood can submit 3 questions for the candidates, so please email me your questions. It is important that we hear the candidates so we can make a wise choice to keep up the high standards provided by Councilman Agelasto.

* 14th Annual Halloween Parade Fundraiser!!! will be held (ironically) on Friday the 13th of September from 7-11 at 2718 Bainbridge St 23225. There will be MUSIC and PUPPETS and DANCING!

Our OHNA meeting will include all the usual updates from police and VCU and our councilman and the only current agenda item is a presentation by a VCU group to promote a writers group.

In other announcements, OHNA has been awarded a Community Roots Grant that will provide 10-12 street trees for our neighborhood! I’ve placed the priority on trees that will positively impact Open High and St Andrews School, but other wells will get trees as well. We will need volunteers to help plant the trees and to participate in watering for the first 2 years. Email me if interested.

Finally, I ask that you be careful if visiting Monroe Park, especially with pets and small children. A lady and her dog from the area were recently in the Park as they were spraying chemicals on trees and her dog collapsed from a seizure, presumably from the exposore. She incurred a $300 Vet bill. One of the chemicals sprayed was an RTSA Horticultural Oil which is listed as a category 1 substance in the Aspiration Toxicity Category by the government. If you get enough of this in your body, it will KILL YOU. I just received the lengthy FOIA Request yesterday and will have more information soon. These chemicals were sprayed by a company hired by VCU.

OHNA Meeting Tonight

The Oregon Hill Neighborhood Association is meeting tonight at 7 pm at St. Andrew’s Church.

The agenda will include a short presentation by a group concerned with recidivism and alternatives to incarceration, new data regarding traffic and speeding along Idlewood,
new stop signs, parks master plan suggestions from Storefront for Design, an update on non-demolition overlay district application. Also, 5th District City Council candidate Stephanie Lynch is supposed to make an appearance.

Really, other than our important updates, there is not much on the agenda except perhaps electing a new Vice President as our sitting VP has moved out of the neighborhood. Oregon Hill Neighborhood Association Meets Tuesday

OHNA (Oregon Hill Neighborhood Association) will be meeting this coming Tuesday (fourth Tuesday of the month) at St Andrew’s Church at 7PM.

On the agenda are updates from VCU (Virginia Commonwealth University, RPD (Richmond Police Department), VCU police, Councilperson Agelasto’s office, a presentation by St. Andrew’s School of it’s proposal for the William Byrd Community House and Idlewood property, a presentation by the Storefront for Design on neighborhood parks, a presentation on an Open High School and Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay grant, stop sign petitioning, an update on the Oregon Hill/Open High/Richmond Parks beehives (Please remember to plant bee friendly plants and please DO NOT use Roundup or any other glyphosate based products as it poses a threat to the bees and possibly to humans. L.A. County recently banned its use as are other localities), FiOS installation, crosswalk painting, New Market corporation’s plan to fill in part of the historic canal, and other important matters.

Hey everyone! Please don’t forget that our next Oregon Hill Neighborhood Association meeting will be Tuesday, February 26th at 7pm inside St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church. Below is the agenda sent by OHNA President Todd Woodson. Hope to see you all there!!!

“First, for those of you that have cats or small dogs that go outside, there is a grave danger to them existing within and adjacent to the neighborhood. 16 months ago, I was “adopted” by two mated feral cats. The male I could eventually pet while the female always ran at the sight of humans. They were not coming inside so I built an insulated house on my porch with an outdoor heating pad and fed and watered them. They went under the house during bitter cold. The female went missing 1 1/2 weeks ago, then yesterday at 5am, my indoor cat woke me up screaming but not wanting to go out. I checked the porch and my other outdoor cat was gone. A night watchman at Hollywood Cemetery confirmed last night that there are at least 7 coyotes in the cemetery that they have seen and are aware of. Right now is mating/gestation season so there will be even more coyotes coming. There was a confirmed sighting some months ago a couple alleys east of me of a coyote with a cat in its mouth. Coyotes will establish a “prey profile” of the easiest, most available food source available which they will seek with keen senses of sight, sound and smell. After research on the internet, I determined loss of cats to coyotes as well as attacks on small dogs is at an epidemic rate in the city and being near the river and an open space like Hollywood compounds the problem. Coyotes are classified as nuisance animals by the Va Department of Game and Inland Fisheries and can be killed at any time (with the exception being with a weapon on Sundays). They are not native to Virginia but populations have exploded since they have moved here. PLEASE take all measures available to safeguard your pets! I am shocked and saddened by my horrible loss and don’t want to see it spread.
Our meeting will start at 7pm with the usual updates from Police and VCU. I will then introduce Dr. Ghazala Hamshi who will speak regarding her candidacy for Virginia Senate in our district, a position currently held by Senator Glen Sturtevant. Dr. Hamshi is a lifelong democrat and she has worked as a college professor and administrator as her career calling.
I would then like to discuss the 2000 Riverfront apartment building’s Special Use Permit Application for an illuminated “2000” sign on their building. This is the apartments next to the river directly across the Lee Bridge from us. Concerns have been noted in the past on light pollution, especially near the river, and the need for such illuminated signage.
We will also have updates from Councilperson Agelasto’s office.

Will will resume our monthly neighborhood association meeting this coming Tuesday at 7pm in St Andrews church, Laurel and Idlewood. Here are the agenda items:

Updates from RPD, VCUPD and VCU and Councilman Agelasto’s office

I am very sad to report that our friend and representative from VCU Police, Officer Greg Felton will be leaving VCU in February. He has made an incredible impact on our quality of life in Oregon Hill. Greg- come back anytime because you are family! Come wish him well!

VCU Student Government Association representative will make a presentation on their Big Event.

We should have updated visual proposed plans for the Dog Run in Parsons Linear Park. This would be located in 400 block of the park.

Michael Brown, a neighbor from Randolph has asked to address the meeting on Councilman Agelasto’s residency issue. Mr. Brown was campaign manager for Parker but has now filed a lawsuit with others including Chuck Richardson to address the residency issue.

I have a meeting scheduled tomorrow with City Officials to discuss remedial efforts to stabilize our Holly Street playground. Built on a ravine later turned landfill, our park is showing clear signs of erosion and needs attention. This will be the fourth meeting on the subject. I will update you accordingly.
