Trash/Recycling Pickup Tomorrow

This Wednesday is a red Wednesday, which means trash and recycling pickup. Please make sure you pick up containers after pickup tomorrow night. They do not belong on the sidewalk after tomorrow night (Let’s keep sidewalks clear for trick-or-treaters and the Halloween Parade).

Don’t forget about VCU’s Paint The Town Green on Saturday. Paint the Town Green is “a collaborative neighborhood clean-up between the VCU Monroe Park campus and its surrounding neighborhoods, including The Fan, Jackson Ward, Carver, Mosby Court, Randolph and Oregon Hill.” Hope to have more details on that soon.

Check out this recent story on how Prince George County is approaching the “Final Frontier of Recycling”. Is Richmond going to reach that frontier?

Tredegar Holds Seance This Halloween

From the American Civil War Center website:

Spirit rapping, ghostly instruments, and other attempts at communion with the dead were once common occurrences in American parlors.

People from every social strata attended séances where mediums purported to be in contact with departed spirits. During the Civil War thousands desperate to contact fallen loved ones enlisted the aid of a medium. What would they have experienced at one of these sittings?

Find out at Historic Tredegar when we present a historically accurate séance inspired by the Spiritualist movement.

Join us October 28th – November 1st for this mysterious evening’s entertainment. Our story centers on Mr. and Mrs. Nelson as they seek to communicate to their son who lost his life during the Civil War.

THIS Tuesday: Farewell to 2013 BHM; Hey There Renegade Market!

From email announcement:

A HUGE thank you
for a fantastic 2013 season at Byrd House Market, and to all our food producer/vendors for all the great work they do to bring you great food wherever you shop it.

In fact, VCU students let the vendors know their appreciation during National Food Day at the Market last week when they visited every one and gave them a Thank You card with a great graphic created from the words collected during a customer survey a few weeks earlier. College students have been swoopin’ in to take advantage of the $10 Student Box (a deal saving them anywhere from 20-30%) provided by participating vendors since first launched at Food Day 2012, but there’s been a real upsurge in their numbers this fall, so as manager, I want to thank them both – students and vendors for their mutual support.

As we head into the holiday season, great gift ideas abound at Byrd House Market… finely grown and crafted foods are always a welcome treat, as well as goodies for your pets and balms for body and soul. Fine goods at great prices! Not sure, ask me!

See you at Byrd House Market!

Questioning Venture Richmond

From citizen “watchdog” C.Wayne Taylor:

Councilor Agelasto requested that Venture Richmond provide financial and other data to the Council’s Finance and Economic Development Committee. Jack Berry presented the information at the committee’s October 24th meeting.

I support Mr. Agelasto’s inquiry into the breadth and depth of the city’s involvement with and funding of Venture Richmond. While Venture Richmond is good at promotional work, it seems to have become a monopoly with excessive influence over the decisions made at city hall.

Mr. Berry is a very experienced promoter. He presents Venture Richmond’s view very effectively. As with most matters, there may be more to the story. He seems to be off on some of the facts included in his presentation. Regarding the amphitheater:

–Mr. Berry said that the planning commission proved the amphitheater project. The planning commission approved a concept plan. The final plan must still get commission approval.

–Mr. Berry refers to the canal’s configuration in the early 1800s. In past presentations he cites the 1850 to 1860 period.

–Mr. Berry repeats the claim that the amphitheater plan is necessary to continue the festival. He has not explained why.

It is noteworthy that councilors Graziano, Robertson and Samuels had no questions.

Also noteworthy is that some of the materials available on-line are very poor quality and some seem to be completely missing.

Presentation: (ed. note: click here to download large .pdf file from the City website)

Venture Richmond self-promotion on pages 9 through 101.
Venture Richmond financial data on pages 103 through 109.
[stop at page 109]

The two pages of financial data are hard to read and in some places illegible. Not all the figures Mr. Berry recites can be verified in the data.

The materials are incomplete. Several financial reports mentioned at the meeting are not included in the on-line documents.

Halloween Parade Excitement Building

Richmond.com has a nice listing for the upcoming Halloween Parade:

All the Saints will host its 8th annual Halloween Parade. You can show up to watch this artsy parade or join in the parade yourself. Bring horns, drums, or your own band to march with. All the Saints is planning huge larger than life dragon demons, day of the dead groomsmen, huge Chelsea Manning and Eric Snowden puppets, the founding fathers, a 25 foot pirate ship and much more. To help make puppets for the parade, join All the Saints’ Lily Lamberta at LoveBomb (6 West 21st between Bainbridge and Hull) on Sunday, Oct. 27 at 1 p.m. Parade will held on Halloween,Thursday, Oct. 31. If you want to join in, meet at Monroe Park at 7 p.m. Otherwise watch the parade make its way through the streets of Oregon Hill.

Special thanks to St. Andrew’s for doing some fund-raising for the parade. I am sure Lily would appreciate more if anyone else would like to chip in.
