Virginia War Memorial Expanding Again

The Times Dispatch has an article this morning on plans to expand the Virginia War Memorial.

The Virginia War Memorial is planning an estimated $17 million expansion to honor Virginia’s service members who have died in the global war on terrorism.
Plans for the new wing also call for building a 350-seat auditorium, a roughly 200-space parking deck, a new exhibit gallery and a classroom for long-distance learning.

Though the state-funded expansion’s details are not fully determined, officials hope to break ground on the project by the end of summer and complete it in 2015, said Jon Hatfield, the memorial’s executive director.

Drive By Shooting

I just wanted to let the neighborhood know that last night at approximately 2:30 a.m. there was a drive-by shooting on the corner of Spring and Cherry Streets. There were four (maybe five) shots fired with one bullet entering the house and breaking a window. No one was hurt, but someone definitely could have been. We did not see/hear anything before or after the incident, but maybe a neighbor did? Hopefully this was a random occurrence, but everyone should be aware that it happened and on the lookout.

Joint House and Senate Recognition of the James River and Kanawha Canal from 1989

The James River and Kanawha Canal is on the National Register of Historic Places and was honored by a joint House and Senate resolution in 1989. George Washington’s canal has survived for 15 generations.

Will it be this generation that shows such a lack of respect for it that it allows Venture Richmond to cut away the historic tow path of the nationally recognized structure because it might block a spectator’s view of a pop band?

Traffic Concerns Grow

The past few evenings have seen a LOT of traffic on S. Cherry Street. Neighbors attribute these gridlock conditions to a variety of reasons- VCU students coming back from winter break, VCU basketball schedule, audience attending Jersey Boys show at the Landmark, lane closures on Belvidere Street, construction on a water main at Cumberland and S. Harrison, etc. At one point it took over 20 minutes to drive in a car from the 600 block of S. Cherry Street to Cumberland.

Folks are also interested in knowing the status of the Idlewood roundabout project, and how Venture Richmond’s amphitheater plans (to be considered next at City’s Planning Commission on Jan. 21st) will impact neighborhood traffic.
