Good News: Student Car Sharing Catching On

From Richmond BizSense:

Virginia Commonwealth University introduced Zipcar in 2010. Miriam Maddux of VCU’s Parking and Transportation department, said the cars have been on a roll.

In 2011, 219 students signed up for Zipcar, and now the school has 359 members. VCU’s fleet consists of a Ford Focus, Scion XB, a Toyota Prius and a Honda Insight.

Maddux said the cars were reserved for about 724 hours each month last year.
VCU has almost 3,000 Zimride members.

Even with more than 7,000 students applying for parking permits last year, Maddux said the school is still pushing the car-sharing services hard.

“We strongly encourage students to use alternative transportation, such as Zipcar and Zimride, for trips off-campus,” she said.

Profile of Worthless Junk

Excerpt from profile of Worthless Junk record label on the HornRVA site:

Worthless Junk couldn’t be more of a labor of love. With most of the acts consolidated right here in Richmond (as opposed to nationally, in the case of Valiant Death), the label can see the byproduct of their endeavors first-hand, be it on a Friday night at The Camel, or hearing a WJ-act namedropped in conversation.

“It’s really great, because I can print posters and what not in-house,” Bucky mentions about his Oregon Hill home-base, ”Plus, if for whatever reason we need to meet about something, we can sit down right here and just do it. No frills, no bullshit. It’s a lot more comfortable. Every day I’m getting an email from a different band wanting to know how they can get on board with the label. The whole thing has been really fulfilling.”

DUI Accident

From Richmond Police report:

Richmond Police investigators have arrested and charged a man with driving under the influence in connection with a fatal crash this morning.

At approximately 12:37 a.m. today, an officer witnessed a crash at the intersection of 2nd and Canal streets. Based on the Department’s Crash Team investigation, they determined that Varinder Chahal, 23, of Springfield, was driving a 2004 Mazda 6 westbound on Canal Street when he ran a red light.

His vehicle T-boned a 2007 Toyota Yaris traveling northbound on 2nd Street. The Yaris then spun around and struck a nearby building. A back seat passenger in the Yaris, Carolina Perez, 19, of Virginia Beach, was taken to VCU Medical Center with life-threatening injuries and died a few hours later.

The 19-year-old driver of the Yaris and 20-year-old front seat passenger were also admitted to VCU Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

Chahal has been charged with driving under the influence, refusal to submit to a blood or breath test and felony manslaughter. Four other passengers in his vehicle were not injured.

Curbside Recycling This Wednesday

The Central Virginia Waste Management Authority will be picking up curbside recycling this coming Wednesday.

Speaking of recycling, there’s this announcement from University of Richmond:

RecycleMania, takes place from Feb. 5 through March 31 and is between over 500 schools. Every school is competing to recycle the most and waste the least. Last year, the University of Richmond ranked first among schools in VA for recycling of bottles and cans! This year we hope to see improvement in our waste per person numbers. Please visit http://sustainability.richmond.edu/involved/competitions/recyclemania.html for more information on the competition and to see how we are doing each week. Please take this opportunity to learn what you can recycle on campus and share your knowledge with a co-worker or friend, http://www.sustainability.richmond.edu/materials-management/recycling/guide.html. With your help, RecycleMania 2012 will be the best one yet.
