To commemorate the Better Housing Coalition’s 25th Anniversary and inspire community partners to work together for the Greater-Richmond region’s advancement, the Better Housing Coalition (BHC) is presenting TransformRVA: A Day of Celebration, Education & Transformation this Thursday at the Omni Hotel:

a full-day event to engage community residents, leaders and corporate and government partners in presentations and dialogues on what needs to be done to make our region a more vibrant, inclusive community in which to live, work and play. The event starts with an awards luncheon with keynote speaker Henry Cisneros, former Mayor of San Antonio and former Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary, on ‘Leadership for 21st Century Cities’. Golden Hammer Awards for excellence in neighborhood revitalization projects over the past year will be awarded (and there are some finalists from some of our neighborhoods). After the luncheon, six concurrent workshops will be given by local and national experts on components of vibrant, inclusive communities where all can thrive, such as housing, education, transportation, civic engagement, placemaking and age-wave planning. Finally, we wind down at the end with a cocktail reception featuring Desiree Roots Centaio and friends (great jazz music), good food and conversation.
Tickets are $100 for the full day, $50 for the luncheon only. Thanks to a sponsor, there are a limited number of event scholarships for resident/community leaders, college/university students, and nonprofit professionals, based on need.

Virginia Nuclear Authority Meets Nearby Wednesday

Received this forwarded email in regard to the Virginia Nuclear Energy Consortium Authority (VNECA)‘ upcoming meeting, which the public is allowed to attend:

VNECA Board Members:

I hope all is well with you. Just wanted to send a quick reminder about Wednesday’s VNECA Board meeting.

The meeting will be held on Wednesday, May 20th at 10am at the VCU East Engineering Hall, 401 West Main Street, Room E3229 (daVinci classroom on third floor). (Ed. note: I redacted the parking code info) The map is attached, but this is the same lot as previous meetings.

If you haven’t RSVP’d already, please let me know if you will be able to attend.

Attached is the agenda for the 4th Precinct MPACT Meeting scheduled for Thursday May 21, 2015 at 6:00 p.m. The meeting will be held in the library of Linwood Holton Elementary School (1600 West Laburnum Avenue).

This month we invite you to attend a MPACT conversation with special guest speakers, John Walsh, Code Enforcement Operations Manager, who will discuss how Code Enforcement is beginning to manage abandoned properties in your community in order to bring them back into compliance and how residents can assist in this process. Torrence Robinson, Transportation Engineering Operations Manager, will discuss the process in which Public Works follows when determining if and where street signage, markings and other traffic signals should be placed.

Please note that this agenda may be revised. Refer to the City’s MPACT website for updates. You will find the attached meeting minutes from our last meeting on April 16 2015 as well as the Noise Meter Ordinance. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Irrigation System Adds To Monroe Park Concerns

Friends-

The following message was received from an employee of DPW today as I was inquiring about the irrigation system that VCU installed about 10 years ago in Monroe Park and that we urgently need to make the park look its best for the UCI race:

I sent an update the first week of May and I thought I included you. Sorry but here goes.

We had a water line break near the house. Repaired. We have the need for a dozen new heads, different varieties. Then the real problem. When they were replacing the sidewalk along Franklin St they tore up over 300 ft of water lines and a large number of the 640 heads. They also tore up some sections along Belvidere but nothing like on Franklin. I have notified my superiors about the damage and in addition my lack of funds and active PO to make the necessary purchases. Even if I could make the purchase I only have one irrigation person to make the repairs. It would require weeks of his time and all other systems would suffer. I included Gregg Hall with VCU in my original e-mail and I apologize again for omitting you.

Without the irrigation system, the park and fountain plantings will turn brown and die this Summer before the UCI race. These questions come to mind:

* Since they have to remove the sidewalks to repair this damage, will they do it correctly in brick as specified by the master plan or waste more money on concrete? Will those responsible be held accountable? Where will this money come from to repair the irrigation?

You couldn’t run a business the way this city is being run now. We are hemorrhaging taxpayer money due to blatant incompetence.

I urge you all in the most emphatic terms to contact your city council representative IMMEDIATELY and demand a stop- work order, correct, appropriate and competently installed 7 foot brick sidewalks with environmentally friendly planting strips as specified by the CITY COUNCIL APPROVED Monroe Park master plan (page 79- its on the richmondgov.com website under planning department master plans) and that those responsible for this incompetent foul up be held accountable. Acting CAO Chris Beschler says he takes responsibility for the mistaken concrete sidewalks. Why doesnt he make amends for this tragedy and the incredibly poor supervision on this project.
