Richmond Community Solar Co-op
The Richmond Community Solar Co-op had an info session last night at Henrico County’s Tuckahoe Library.

Neighbors in Richmond have formed a solar co-op to make going solar easier and cheaper. Co-op members use their group buying power to get a discount and work with the support of the non-profit VA SUN as they go solar. VA SUN brought the first Solarize program to Virginia and has helped hundreds of homeowners go solar in the Commonwealth.
Based on the same principle as buying in bulk, co-op members purchase solar systems together to save money and share knowledge. The group uses a competitive bidding process to select a single company that will install systems on all of the participating homes. Each participant signs his or her own contract with the installer, but everyone gets the bulk discount.
By going solar as a group we can save up to 20% off the cost of a solar system. You’ll also have the support of the group instead of navigating an often-complicated process alone. VA SUN is supporting the group effort.

Girl Scouts Organizing

St. Andrew’s School and Church are co-hosting a Girl Scout troop in Oregon Hill. We are starting with girls between kindergarten and 5th grade. The first meeting is next Tuesday, November 4 at 5:30 at the School. All are welcome. For more information, please contact Beth Holthaus at bholthaus@st-andrews-school.org.
Trash/Recycling Pickup Tomorrow
This Wednesday is a red Wednesday, which means trash and recycling pickup. Ideally, rolling recycling containers are stored and deployed in the back alleys along with trash cans. Please make sure you pick up containers after pickup tomorrow night.

In recycling news, the United Nations named the top 10 countries with the highest per capita e-waste rates. The Unites States, with a per-capita e-waste generation rate of 48.7 pounds per person, was eighth in the list. St. Andrews School Open Again
Richmond BizSense has an article on St.Andrews’s renovation and recovery from fire. Here’s an excerpt:
St. Andrews School has wrapped up renovations of its 114-year-old building at 227 S. Cherry St. and reopened for classes Sept. 28 – a few weeks later than originally planned because of a fire in one of its new air conditioning units in late August.
It took a while to clear away the smoke and water damage and ensure the remaining units were safe, said Michelle Rosman, the school’s director of marketing and communications. But once doors finally opened, this year’s 97 students were welcomed into a clean, cool building, with a new HVAC system, buffed floors that removed years of wear and new plaster walls made to match the historic construction.
The work on the building largely consisted of repairing damage to the roof and gutters, both of which were very old and allowed water to seep into the school.
The renovations were fueled by a $1.2 million fundraising campaign completed last year and pro bono contracting work from The Monument Cos. The school surpassed its goal by about $300,000, which allowed it to not only pay for the construction work, but to purchase brand new furniture and ensure each classroom has up-to-date technology, as well.
Virginia State Penitentiary, Richmond – Filmed in 1991
The Virginia State Penitentiary was closed and demolished in 1991. The state pen was located at 500 Spring Street in Richmond. This is a look at the grounds and cells after the inmates were moved.
