The Cathedral of Sacred Heart is having its 3rd Annual International Food Festival from 11 am to 4 pm:

Members from parishes and local missions are coming together for a culturally diverse celebration with the Richmond community. You’ll find international selections from Our Lady of Lourdes Filipino Festival, St. Benedicts Oktoberfest, Sacred Heart Hispanic Festival and many more.
This is a 100% Pure Non-Profit festival. 100% of every purchase made supports that unique mission or parish. There will be culturally diverse entertainment and raffles along with lots of children’s activities, as well as tours of the historic Cathedral that include the museum and crypt.
Admission is FREE and there is convenient parking at the VCU deck
adjacent to the Altria Theatre.

The Gay Community Center of Richmond is hosting the 8th Annual Richmond Zine Fest from 11 am to 5 pm. While it may not be that close to Oregon Hill, it bears mentioning simply because all of the local zinesters (including Throttle writers) who have called the neighborhood home.

I already plugged the Library book drive, there’s a Gellman Room Concert at 2:00 PM- Small Trunk Opera presents “Cox and Box”- an 1866 comic operetta with music by Sir Arthur Sullivan of Gilbert & Sullivan fame.

Bluegrass Service This Sunday

On Sunday, October 5, St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church will hold its 11:00 am Service of Communion outside at the Grace Arents Garden where the Byrd House Market is held. Music will have a bluegrass flavor, and prayers, chants and hymns will celebrate and give thanks for the wonder of creation. You are invited to bring photos or drawings of animals or things in creation that are special to you and/or that you would like to pray for and bless with special intention. You may also bring cut flowers to help decorate the altar. There will be no live pets at this service. All are welcome!

Boots and Shoes Represent Virginians, Iraqis and Afghans Lost in the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars

Today as the United States intensifies its military involvement in Iraq and Syria, the Richmond Peace Education Center is sponsoring an exhibit designed to promote somber reflection about the human cost of our recent wars to the commonwealth of Virginia.

An exhibit symbolizing U.S. servicemen and women as well as Iraqi and Afghan civilians killed in the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars will be on display 11am to 6pm, October 1 at Monroe Park.

RVA Sparks Award Deadline Is Next Monday

RVA Sparks Award deadline: Monday, Sept. 22
Are you a young person that sees something in your world that you want to improve? Do you have a new idea for how to make a positive impact in your community? The Spark RVA Awards is here to inspire creative thinkers to use innovation for social good. The Spark RVA Awards expects to make up to ten (10) awards over two funding cycles in 2014. The minimum award is $1,000 and the maximum award is $10,000. Award recipients agree to share what they learn with The Community Foundation and with others to help inspire further innovation and community change. The Community Foundation will profile the award recipients on its website and in a variety of other venues. In 2014, the Spark RVA Awards will focus on youth engagement and leadership to improve the lives of people in the community. The program will be piloted in metro Richmond in partnership with youth serving organizations, schools (public or private), faith communities, and/or locally operated businesses. Registration opens TODAY for HandsOn Greater Richmond’s HandsOn Day:

1 Day. 1000 Volunteers. People at the Center of Change.

Imagine how much better Richmond could be if we all spent just 4 hours doing something together for the community. Join one thousand other volunteers across the metro region this October at nearly 60 sites to make a difference in Richmond on one of many organized volunteer opportunities.

There is at least one project in the neighborhood, at the William Byrd Community House, called Growing Our Yard.

UDC Meets Thursday

Reminder from City Councilperson Parker Agelasto:

The Urban Design Committee will meet on September 4 at 10:00 am in the 5th Floor Conference Room at City Hall. On the agenda is the Conceptual Location, Character and Extent Review of the proposed roundabout along Idlewood Avenue between S. Cherry and S. Harrison Streets (UDC No. 2014-30, as well as the same review of the proposed Floyd Avenue Bike Boulevard (UDC No. 2014-31). The Carytown Gateway Sign (UDC No. 2014-12) will receive its Final Location, Character and Extent Review.

Additional:

Kimley-Horn Associates has completed the design for the proposed roundabout on Idlewood Avenue between S. Cherry and S. Harrison Streets. Residents from Randolph and Oregon Hill are invited to walk the site with the engineers on Wednesday, September 3, at 9:00 am. The Urban Design Committee will then review the proposal at its meeting on September 4 at 10:00 am in the 5th Floor Conference Room at City Hall.
