Grace Street as Chinatown

One of the benefits of living in Oregon Hill, so near the VCU campus, is the plethora of food choices available. Oh sure, we have good restaurants like Mamma Zu’s, Pescados, and 821 Cafe right in the neighborhood, and Elephant Thai and the chain Chili’s nearby. But only a few more blocks away is what one local artist describes as “Richmond’s Chinatown”, ready to fill student appetites.

I just wish that the Grace Street places would ease up on the “door hanger” flyers (many of which we eventually have to pick up as litter) and start advertising on this and other RVAnews community news sites instead.

Check Your Drains/SeeClickFix

With wet weather coming in the two or three days, it makes sense to take a moment to check your residence’s and street storm drains to make sure they are in operating order.

For example, it looks like dirt and debris from recent storms and street cleaning have blocked this one at the northwest corner of S.Laurel and China streets.

I know there has been some frustration and cynicism with the City’s online Citizen Request process in the past, but I did use the revamped one to report this drain, so let’s see how well it works. It’s worth noting that you can also use the mobile phone app SeeClickFix to report issues to the City now.

Dog Found Near VCU

As the Japanese nuclear plants explode, sometimes its best to concentrate on problems you can actually do something about- in this case, a lost dog found on Cumberland near the City Auditorium/VCU student rec center. In that spirit, I will reprint this post, which originally appeared on Craigslist and then Fan of the Fan sites.

FOUND TAN AND SOME WHITE – 3/9/11 (VCU CARY STREET GYM AREA) Found a female tan and pit bull, pit bull mix, or staffordshire terrier mix around VCU. She was seen running down Cumberland road and across the Downtown expressway at 11 am on Wednesday 3/9/11. She was later found hanging around the Cary Street Gym at VCU around 5 pm. She is sweet, looks young and well taken care of.
