Tomorrow is ‘Red Wednesday’, Which Means Recycling!

Some of my neighbors put out their recycling out on the sidewalk last Wednesday, but in fact, recycling gets collected every other Wednesday, and tomorrow is considered a ‘Red Wednesday’ for collection. Please click here for more information.

The confusion is somewhat understandable, but when the recycling is left out, it collects non-recyclable trash and a lot of stuff blows all over the place with wind, so please do not leave recycling out on the sidewalk all week in the future.

There will probably be a lot of phone books in this week’s bins, since new ones were delivered in the last two weeks.

OHNA + MPACC Meetings This Week

The Oregon Hill Neighborhood Association (OHNA) meets every fourth Tuesday at 7 pm at the William Byrd Community House. That’s this Tuesday, the 22nd.

Also, from announcement:

Please join your neighbors and community leaders for the 4th Precinct MPACT meeting at 6:30 PM on Thursday, February 24, 2011 at the 4th Precinct Police Headquarters, Community Room, 2219 Chamberlayne Ave. This monthly meeting is an opportunity to hear from City Leadership about plans to address citizen issues and to discuss with your neighbors pressing issues in your community. MPACT is designed to deliver results to high priority citizen requests and to highlight pressing issues of community members. These monthly meetings provide a chance for citizens to hear what requests have been handled and to dialogue with the City Leadership on neighborhood concerns.

The February meeting will cover the issues presented at previous meetings, and will include presentations on Community Gardens by Dr. Carolyn Graham, DCAO for Human Services and on Water Utility Rates from Robert Steidel, Acting Director for Public Utilities.

Please consider joining the MPACT team for the 4th Precinct every 4th Thursday at 6:30 PM at the 4th Precinct Police Headquarters.

From:
The 4th Precinct MPACT Co-Chairs: Louise Caine & Horace Anderson (Sector 411), Matt Peanort & Barbara Abernathy (Sector 412) and Charles Finley (Sector 413).

Virginia high school video contest — winner gets $1000

Reposted from Bon Air Buzz

Got a minute or two? Got some ideas on how to recycle plastic bags?

That’s all it takes, and it could be worth up to $1,000 in a video-making contest going on now through March 1, 2011.

Anyone enrolled in a Virginia high school can enter. Create a 60-second to 2-minute video showing ways to reuse and recycle the free plastic bags like you find in a grocery store. Then go to www.abagslife.com/va and submit your video. Contest rules are also on the site.

There’s a prize for First ($1000), Second ($500) and Third ($300) place in two categories — Reuse and Recycle.

Checking In With Grace Arents Community Garden

From the Byrd House Market blog:

Picture of garden in Mali:

Actually farmers markets and communal gardening are probably the norm in most of the rest of the world. Leave it to the US to think we’re “discovering” something!!! My trip to Mali was a wonderful five week sojourn to new experiences, warm friendships and plans. I look forward to sharing what I learned with anyone who is interested.

One is the previously mentioned William Byrd Community House spaghetti dinner at Perly’s on Thursday, Feb. 17.

Another is one for the All The Saints Theater Company this coming Friday. For more info, click here. Remember, All The Saints are the folks who help organize the annual Halloween parade that goes through Oregon Hill.

Museum Has African Art

Forgive the simplistic headline, but I did want to add a corollary or two to the earlier post about the 2BNB bus.
Yesterday morning I attended a media preview for an upcoming new exhibit at the Virginia Museum of FIne Arts on African art. While the Times Dispatch did a good preview of this new exhibit, I am looking forward to seeing what Harry writes about it.

Also coming up is the Picasso exhibit. I hope the new free bus service can be utilized by residents and students to visit these and other museum features.

I will dedicate this post to Professor H. McKim Steele.

News On Farmers’ Markets

Given the Byrd House Market is in Oregon Hill, this information from ConnectRichmond is important to relate:

The Virginia Department of Social Services has launched a statewide
program that allows SNAP participants (the Supplemental Nutrition
Assistance Program–formerly, food stamps) to purchase local produce
at farmers markets. Individual markets and growers should apply by
February 25, 2011, to be part of this program. To download an
application or learn more about this program, visit:

Virginia DSS also has released a comprehensive list of free tax
assistance program sites in Virginia for low to middle income
Virginians who qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit. For more
