Obituary for Wilton Journey

From the Times Dispatch obituary:

JOURNEY, Wilton “Earl,” 89, of Shackleford, formerly of Richmond, passed away peacefully on July 28, 2014, at the home of his son. Earl was the son of the late Lottie Virginia and Clarence Churchill Journey. He was raised in Oregon Hill. He proudly enjoyed telling tales of his youth there. He was a WWII Navy veteran.

He was a member of the Carpenters Union 388 and retired from Koger Properties. He was instrumental in the construction of several landmark buildings in the Richmond area including, Richmond City Hall, the Coliseum and Imperial Plaza.

Interment to follow in Oakwood Cemetery.

Thanks, Project Clean Move!

A big thank you to the folks who worked on yesterday’s Oregon Hill cleanup as part of Project Clean Move, including VCU’s Tito Luna (who took the photo below), Clean City Commission’s Jane Hotchkiss, and neighbor Jimmy Blackford, who lead the Oregon Hill effort, the City trash truck workers and volunteers. A big NO thank you to the people who dumped their trash on the streets and sidewalks, and their landlords. We will see more code enforcement in the future. While VCU has stepped up with Project Clean and Green Move, residents need to report this illegal dumping activity with details about the offenders. More than 7 tons of debris was collected yesterday and the dumping is a serious burden on the City’s budget.

Jimmy Takes The Lead For This Saturday’s Neighborhood Cleanup

From email:

lots of furniture is getting tossed into our alleys, so………….
THIS SAT. 8AM-NOON: OREGON HILL CLEAN-UP (part II)

All volunteers will meet at 8am Saturday Aug. 2nd at Pleasants Park, the little park at the corner of S. Laurel St & Albemarle St. There will be enough free on-street parking spots for those who drive there. The clean-up is listed as lasting until 11am or 12 noon. But for whoever wants to keep working even later than that, there will be more clean-up tasks available.
We’ll be going thru the alleys of Oregon Hill with a City dump truck tossing in abandoned furniture & the like. Also, down the sidewalks to toss in recently pruned tree limbs. Sweeping off the bridges over 195. Brick sidewalk upkeep: pulling out the weeds.
If you can help out Saturday, please send me a msg. via Facebook letting me know.
Volunteers can put in a partial shift. Even if you cannot stay the whole time, please come & work with us for as long as you can – even 30 minutes!! If you simply cannot be there at 8am, we still need you. Late arrivals can call me at 804-335-5808 to find our location.
Volunteers should wear work clothes that can get dirty. Hats are useful. I’ll bring bottled water, trash bags, & litter grabbers.
Saturday’s forecast: Humid w/ a high of 87 with possible showers.
Also on on Aug 1 & 2, there will be a Goodwill truck at Morris & Floyd in The Fan collecting household donations-clothes, electronics, computers & whatever.
Affiliated with VCU’s Clean & Green Move.
NEXT CLEAN-UP; SAT. AUG 23rd
Yours,
Jimmy Blackford

Update On LOVE

From OHNA President Jennifer Hancock:

There was a question at last night’s OHNA meeting about what happened to the LOVE sculpture. It was up one week and then disappeared.

The sculpture’s “O” was damaged during a storm around July 3rd or 4th. It is currently in a neighbor’s garage awaiting repairs. Once the repairs are complete, it will resume its stay at the Overlook.

Did you know it is National Blueberry Month? Check out all this good info on Blueberries – recipes, activities, health benefits…

What you can pick up and make quick for supper tonight?
Snack on the cool fruits of summer – blueberries, blackberries, carrots, cucumbers, melons, cherry or sungold tomatoes – just rinse, chop and chomp.
Cool corn and sweet red pepper salad, garnished with dill, ground pepper.
Time for a homemade minestrone (filled with all the bounty of summer veggies) or chilled potato leek soup.
Tempest tossed salad of tender greens with cantaloupe chunks and sizzling sausage slices. Squeeze a little orange over it and and black pepper.
Never quite sure how to use herbs or spices (or both!?!). This site has great ideas and actual information…

Green beans, Zuchini, Acorn and Summer squash, Red potatoes … sounds like a roast to me!
