Infrastructure

It’s been a rough week for Oregon Hill and the City in general.

The water crisis has lead to several pipe breaks around the city, including one on S. Laurel Street.
Residents are thankful that it is being addressed quickly, despite the falling snow.

Also, a driver reportedly ran into and knocked down two streetlights along Belvidere. They first slammed into the one at the end of Albemarle Street and then must have drove off and hit another one at the end of Spring Street. Both streetlight poles are down and residents have dragged them off the street for safety’s sake.

One resident reported it was a dark red SUV and the incident had smashed the front headlight out on the passenger side.

VCU Police Investigating Halloween Fight

From WRIC story:

Investigators learned that, around 11:30 p.m., an altercation took place among a large group of people at the intersection of the 700 block of West Cary Street and South Laurel Street. The group was gathered outside of a restaurant, which its owner later confirmed was Tito’s Taqueria and Bar.

“Our victim had asked a question of another patron in the line for that establishment — [asking] if tickets were needed to enter — and some derogatory words were shared … [then] they started arguing,” said David Kelly, detective sergeant of investigations for VCU Police. “[It] turned into a fight, where two females were fighting.”

Kelly said that one of the females then attacked the victim, followed by a man who jumped in and also attacked her.

According to police, the victim is affiliated with VCU and had significant injuries to her face. Though she was later discharged from the hospital, she continues to go through ongoing medical treatment due to injuries impacting her eye.

Anyone with information on this incident is asked to contact the VCU Police Department. Tips can also be submitted to Metro Richmond Crime Stoppers at 804-780-1000. You may do so anonymously.

Street Stuff

A couple of street/traffic/parking concerns:

A hole opened up in the 600 block of S. Laurel St. where there had been water utility repairs.

It has been reported to the City and there is a large traffic barrel sitting over it right now.

Also, the City made an announcement concerning upcoming work. From Monday, June 17 to Tuesday, October 29 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., around the intersection of Cumberland Avenue and Laurel Street,
contractors will be installing signal poles, traffic signal controllers, countdown pedestrian signal heads, push buttons and other traffic signal equipment. Some lanes of travel will be temporarily closed during this process.

In addition, street cleaning will be taking place next week. Watch for the signs or risk getting towed!
