From the Times Dispatch obituary:
JOURNEY, Wilton “Earl,” 89, of Shackleford, formerly of Richmond, passed away peacefully on July 28, 2014, at the home of his son. Earl was the son of the late Lottie Virginia and Clarence Churchill Journey. He was raised in Oregon Hill. He proudly enjoyed telling tales of his youth there. He was a WWII Navy veteran.
—
He was a member of the Carpenters Union 388 and retired from Koger Properties. He was instrumental in the construction of several landmark buildings in the Richmond area including, Richmond City Hall, the Coliseum and Imperial Plaza.

Interment to follow in Oakwood Cemetery.
A big thank you to the folks who worked on yesterday’s Oregon Hill cleanup as part of Project Clean Move, including VCU’s Tito Luna (who took the photo below), Clean City Commission’s Jane Hotchkiss, and neighbor Jimmy Blackford, who lead the Oregon Hill effort, the City trash truck workers and volunteers. A big NO thank you to the people who dumped their trash on the streets and sidewalks, and their landlords. We will see more code enforcement in the future. While VCU has stepped up with Project Clean and Green Move, residents need to report this illegal dumping activity with details about the offenders. More than 7 tons of debris was collected yesterday and the dumping is a serious burden on the City’s budget.
With the end of July came many turnovers in leases, and as renters moved out (and moved in) they have created piles of trash.
Along Idlewood…(and we have seen this here before…)
Near China and Laurel:
“Stripers: The Quest for the Bite,” a new documentary by Miller Productions, will be screened this Friday, 6pm at the downtown library auditorium. Free. There will be a discussion and DVD/photo signing after with music by Jim Westlyn.

(Also, many of the local documentaries from this year’s RVA Environmental Film Festival will be at the Celebration of the James film series at North Avenue Library this Saturday at 2pm. See the Style article on this by clicking here.)
From email:
lots of furniture is getting tossed into our alleys, so………….
THIS SAT. 8AM-NOON: OREGON HILL CLEAN-UP (part II)All volunteers will meet at 8am Saturday Aug. 2nd at Pleasants Park, the little park at the corner of S. Laurel St & Albemarle St. There will be enough free on-street parking spots for those who drive there. The clean-up is listed as lasting until 11am or 12 noon. But for whoever wants to keep working even later than that, there will be more clean-up tasks available.
We’ll be going thru the alleys of Oregon Hill with a City dump truck tossing in abandoned furniture & the like. Also, down the sidewalks to toss in recently pruned tree limbs. Sweeping off the bridges over 195. Brick sidewalk upkeep: pulling out the weeds.
If you can help out Saturday, please send me a msg. via Facebook letting me know.
Volunteers can put in a partial shift. Even if you cannot stay the whole time, please come & work with us for as long as you can – even 30 minutes!! If you simply cannot be there at 8am, we still need you. Late arrivals can call me at 804-335-5808 to find our location.
Volunteers should wear work clothes that can get dirty. Hats are useful. I’ll bring bottled water, trash bags, & litter grabbers.
Saturday’s forecast: Humid w/ a high of 87 with possible showers.
Also on on Aug 1 & 2, there will be a Goodwill truck at Morris & Floyd in The Fan collecting household donations-clothes, electronics, computers & whatever.
Affiliated with VCU’s Clean & Green Move.
NEXT CLEAN-UP; SAT. AUG 23rd
