Enjoying Belle Island
Neighbor Charles Pool took some photos of folks enjoying the fine weather at Belle Island today.
1889 Baist Atlas
Like the more widely known early 20th century Sanborn Insurance maps, the 1889 Baist Atlas covers the entire City of Richmond in great detail, identifying frame structures in yellow, and brick buildings in red. The map above covers a portion of the Oregon Hill neighborhood south of Spring Street. This area is still referred to as “Belvidere” on the map because it was largely subdivided from the original Belvidere estate. In 1889 few houses south of Spring Street and west of Belvidere Street were made of brick, other than the Parsons House (identified as the Spring St. Home), and the row of brick houses on the 600 block of Holly Street. All of the vibrant Oregon Hill neighborhood east of Belvidere Street has been demolished, including the row of brick houses on Green Street shown on this map that were built by the infamous Ben Green.

Attached is the agenda for the 4th Precinct MPACT meeting scheduled for Thursday July 16, 2015 at 6:00 p.m. The meeting will be held in the library of Linwood Holton Elementary School (1600 West Laburnum Avenue).

This month we invite you to attend a MPACT conversation with special guest speakers, M.S. Khara, City Engineer for the Department of Public Works, who will discuss current and future infrastructure plans as it relates to the UCI World Championship race. Paul Manning ,Chief Service Officer with the Office of Volunteerism, who will discuss the City Hall Ambassador Program. The purpose of this new volunteer effort is to enhance the visitor experience at City Hall. The City Hall Ambassadors will welcome visitors, answer basic City questions and provide directional assistance.

Monkey vs Pitbull
Yes, this trash/bulk pickup has already been reported to SeeClickFix, the City’s service app.
And yes, the playing pitbull was disallowed from disembowling the monkey. Hopefully the monkey will get picked up before plastic goes everywhere. This encounter was not quite as action packed as bear vs. pitbull.
Rifle Fire In Hollywood Cemetery Tomorrow
Hollywood Cemetery has a ceremony planned for tomorrow at 10:00 am and there will be rifle fire. The cemetery office apologizes for the late notice, the ceremony holders did not realize they should supply advance notice.
In other news, complaints from neighbors are mounting in regard to the now DAILY cannon fire from the American Civil War Museum at Tredegar. It’s being shot off around 2:20 pm every day “for tourism”, while disturbing residents and their pets. Some who are closer to Tredegar are becoming concerned about the noise actually shaking and damaging their walls and property.

VCU/HDL Deal Blowup
Excerpts from Richmond BizSense article:
Just after it informed VCU that it must back out of a promise made three years ago, Health Diagnostic Laboratory must also explain what happened to “large sums of money” that may have changed hands in the years leading up to its recent financial troubles.

HDL also recently informed VCU that it will not be able to fulfill the $4 million pledge it made to the school’s athletic department three years ago, the school confirmed this week.
HDL, once one of the city’s fastest-growing and most generous corporations, failed to pay its most recent $400,000 annual installment to the school due June 30.
The pledge – the largest in VCU Athletics history – promised equal installments over 10 years to help fund the school’s new $25 million basketball practice facility, along with other capital projects.
In exchange, HDL’s name was plastered on signage around all of VCU’s athletic facilities, including the Siegel Center, Sports Backers Stadium and the Cary Street Gym, declaring them part of the HDL, Inc. Athletic Village.
