This Saturday the Richmond Youth Hostel will be holding a benefit event at the Virginia War Memorial from 6 to 10 pm.

Monroe Park Fountain Work
Several volunteers, including Oregon Hill neighbors Todd Woodson, Charles Pool, and VCU’s Tito Luna, Turk Sties, Elinor Kuhn, and City’s Paul Manning worked yesterday afternoon to give the fountain in Monroe Park a fresh new look. The water should be turned on in the next few days, which will make it pop even more.
Special thanks to Todd Woodson for spearheading the effort and securing a Love Your Block grant. Paul Manning, the City’s Chief Service Officer, provided the funding as well as volunteering. A few people in the park who identified themselves as homeless saw what they were doing and pitched in as well.

Congratulations To Salvation Tattoo, Mammu Zu, and L’Opposum
Style magazine‘s annual ‘Best of Richmond’ issue is out this week, and in it is a recommendation for Salvation Tattoo Gallery (on W. Cary Street) as “Readers’ Choice” for the area’s “Best Tattoo Parlor”.
In almost 11 years of operation, husband-and-wife team Katie Davis and Fred Pinckard have become known as much for their bod style as their reputation for consistent work. The couple now works with there additional artists who play off each others’ strengths. David adds that their manager, Philip Armstrong, makes a point to remember every client’s name. “You’re going to have something on you permanently,” Davis says, “and you’re going to remember where you were and what the feeling was like when you got that done.”
Mamma Zu (corner of Spring and S. Pine) also received mention as the “Reader’s Choice” for the “Best Italian Restaurant” (though Style could not resist adding a snooty comment about its Oregon Hill locale), while L’Opposum (corner of China and S. Pine) has a small article on its “Most Entertaining Interior”.
Trash/Recycling Pickup Thursday
This Wednesday is a red Wednesday, which normally means trash and recycling pickup, however, because of the Monday holiday, pickup will be Thursday morning. Please make sure you pick up containers after pickup. They do not belong on the sidewalk after Thursday night.

In local AND national recycling news, Rock-Tenn Co. agreed to acquire Richmond-based rival MeadWestvaco Corp. in a deal valued at about $9.2 billion to create the world’s second-largest packaging company. MeadWestvaco outlined plans earlier this month to spin off its specialty-chemical unit, a transaction that will still proceed. Environmentalists will be watching how the new executive leadership team for the combined company will improve recycling efforts.
