Neighbor Charles Pool took a few photographs today of the crew working on rebuilding the Tredegar wall.

Illegally Demolished Historic Wall To Be Rebuilt HIGHER
After the historic Tredegar wall was illegally demolished several years ago, and much controversy resulted, several promises were made to rebuild the wall.
Recently, a neighbor who works in historic preservation has been helping preparations to finally start work on rebuilding the wall.
However, this website has recently learned that there are new plans to rebuild the wall at least twenty feet higher than its previous height. No one could comment on this development at press time.
While it remains a mystery as to the exact reasons being given for this raise, there is some speculation on the need to use ‘extra’ historic bricks that will be made available from the planned updating of old City Hall. Some Oregon Hill residents believe the higher wall will be used to host community movie screenings, while others believe that the City is preparing the wall for river level rise due to climate change.
Please stay tuned as this story develops.

Vigil and Protest At Dominion’s HQ On Wednesday
Virginians are gathering on Tredegar Street this coming Wednesday morning, concerned about the ongoing tragedy of Fukushima and Dominion’s nuclear plans.
I expect a less noisy and more somber event than the recent pipeline protest, but perhaps as equally as important.
From FaceBook event page:
Please join us ~
Wed. March 11, 2015 from 7:30am-10:00am.
We will be participating in the global day of action ~ Commemorating the 4th year of the ongoing nuclear disaster in Fukushima and protesting against Dominion’s plan to build a 3rd nuclear reactor at North Anna on the fault line.8:30am ~Vigil for the victims of Fukushima in plain view of Dominion Executives as they drive into work.
(will we be the next victims?)
10:00am ~ Moment of silence for the victims of Fukushima, followed by a brief memorial tribute and press conference. Our State & Federal government is placing us at enormous risk!
Even with the past nuclear disasters (TMI, Chernobyl and the ongoing/uncontrollable disaster in Fukushima spreading radiation all over the world), nothing has stopped VA Dominion Power from moving forward with a plan for another reactor at North Anna.
Protest Against Dominion
This morning there was a protest march against Dominion Power that purposefully blocked the intersection of Tredegar Street and Brown’s Island Way (aka 2nd Street Connector) to raise awareness of Dominion’s role in profiteering, pipelines, pollution, and climate change. Eventually fire trucks were called to assist a massive police presence in clearing protesters from the street.

Editorial: You have to wonder if Dominion executives are regretting their arrogant insistence on building their riverfront headquarters and 2nd Street Connector. Their corporate hegemony, combined with some of their biggest supporters corrupting and dishonoring state office is just making citizens angrier.
Joseph Reid Anderson’s Birthday
From Hollywood Cemetery’s FaceBook page:
Today is Joseph Reid Anderson’s birthday. After building the Shenandoah Valley Turnpike, Anderson came to Richmond and bought Tredgar Iron Works which quickly became the leading iron foundry in the South. He and his family are buried next to President Tyler in Presidents Circle.
Shiver Redux
Took part in the Shiver in The River cleanup this morning. Started by myself picking up the smaller bits of plastic and cigarette butts on 5th Street and near Tredegar but gradually worked over to the riverfront between Tredegar and Lee Bridge with some likeminded folks. Other groups of volunteers worked on other parts of the riverfront area.

It was a beautiful day for it and there were plenty of birds enjoying the sun and river.

Some were able to find sponsorship for jumping in the river after the cleanup was over.

Our dedicated Councilperson Parker Agelasto was there, as well as members of RVA Clean Sweep. (They have an upcoming cleanup for the Randolph neighborhood scheduled, for those inclined.)
Overall, a good first annual event and congratulations to Keep Virginia Beautiful for hosting it. Maybe Oregon Hill can sponsor a team for it next year. In the meantime, it looks like VCU’s Paint The Town Green event is scheduled for April 18th. If folks would like to volunteer for it and other neighborhood cleanups, please contact Cherry Street resident Jimmy Blackford at prairiegates at hotmail.com or (804) 335-5808.
Shiver In The River/Artifacts Roadshow This Saturday
Two Saturday events happening close by- the first ever “Shiver in The River” at Tredegar, which is sort of a volunteer cleanup/winter carnival/chilly dip fundraising event, and the winter edition of the ‘artifacts roadshow’ at the Virginia War Memorial, where you can bring in military objects for examination by experts.
Update on Replacing The Illegally Demolished Tredegar Wall
Pine Street neighbor Bryan Green, who serves on the City’s Urban Design Committee, has made a test panel for replacing the illegally demolished Tredegar wall. Because there isn’t enough surviving brick to rebuild the wall, he has ordered hand made brick from North Carolina. The test panel is by the sign in the Belle Isle parking lot.
Bryan thinks that they will start on rebuilding the wall as soon as they get in the proper mortar and when it warms up a bit. He hopes to supply some more details soon.

The Richmond Folk Festival kicked off last night, despite rain. The theme for this year’s festival are favorites from the last ten years of National/Richmond Folk Festival. It continues today at noon and concludes Sunday at 6 pm.
