Volunteers Needed For the 2014 USA Cycling Collegiate National Championships

I have mentioned this before, and now there is this plea:

In just a few weeks from now, we will be hosting the 2014 USA Cycling Collegiate National Championships in downtown Richmond. The event will feature 400 student athletes from more than 100 colleges and universities from across the country. It is also serving as the official test event for the 2015 UCI Road World Championships.

We are seeking committed individuals to serve as course marshals on Friday, May 2nd, Saturday, May 3rd and Sunday, May 4th, 2014. The course marshal role is considered to be the “best seat in the house” as they assist race organizers with crowd control and traffic safety as the racers speed by.

Each volunteer will receive a t-shirt to commemorate the event, food and beverage during their shift and a 15% discount code to use on Richmond 2015 merchandise. In addition, if you volunteer for 2014, Richmond 2015 will provide you with your first choice of volunteer role for the 2015 World Championships when the best men and women cyclists, from all over the world, race through the streets of the Richmond region.

Getting Ready For April 12 Clean Up

Councilperson Parker Agelasto has purposely scheduled his 5th District Clean Up the same day (Saturday, April 12) as VCU’s Paint The Town Green event.

I have heard that St. Andrew’s Church will be joining in- from Deacon Barbara Ambrose-

St. Andrew’s will have a clean up day at the church on Saturday April 12. Perfect timing for us to prepare for all the festivities of Holy week! We will hold a prayer service at 8:15 or 8:30 and would love to invite the other volunteers to join us. We are also talking about having some refreshments available for volunteers if they want to take a break. If you want to forward this e-mail to whoever is heading up the neighborhood effort, feel free to do so.

Skipping April Fools Day This Year

While we have had some fun for past years’ April Fools Days, I am skipping this year. Its not the first time I have skipped, but this year in particular my heart is just not in it. For one thing, I am not sure if I could come up with anything as outrageous as what is really happening right now-

Venture Richmond is getting ready to alter and diminish one of Richmond’s most historic features, the James River and Kanawah Canal, designed and presided over by George Washington, for an unneeded amphitheater. Besides putting future restoration at risk, ‘Vulture Richmond’ is doing this by breaking promises to go through the Section 106 review process. This is after a historic wall was illegally demolished on property leased to Venture Richmond.

Board members of Venture Richmond are also behind the Monroe Park Conservancy, a mysterious and dastardly plan to privatize Monroe Park (for VCU). The City government is backing this plot, saying it does not have enough money to renovate and maintain the City’s oldest public park as a public park, despite dedicating millions of dollars to establishing a training field for a professional football team, that is owned by a millionaire. The local anarchists are doing a better job of defending the public interest than City government.

‘Vulture Richmond” is also behind an even bigger plot to force the construction of a minor league baseball stadium in historic Shockoe Bottom neighborhood, despite passionate, now international, public protest. This is the third or fourth time that this scheme has been tried, and one of the principles behind it is a developer who was convicted and went to jail for his part in a City Council bribery scheme. Again, it looks like promised historic preservation oversight is being finessed despite public promises.

The mainstream media has sometimes joined the fun of reporting April Fools Day stories. Maybe this year they can try reporting on the reality of these truly outrageous happenings.

Before Its Too Late…Today

The current proposal to construct a baseball stadium in Richmond’s Shockoe Bottom has given rise to public concern over the cultural and historical resources in Richmond’s Shockoe Bottom district. In response to this public debate, history enthusiasts and preservationists, planners, students, scholars, educators, and members of the general public are invited to a one-day educational symposium on March 29th, 10:15 am to 4:00 pm at the Richmond Public Library in support of an archaeology of Shockoe Bottom… “Before It’s Too Late”.

The symposium brings together experts and scholars on Richmond’s archaeology, history, and historic preservation. The symposium will also discuss how the public can become better stewards of Richmond’s vast cultural and historical resources. Presentations will explore the archaeological review process with an emphasis upon Federal Section 106.

In regard to the 106, I hope discussion will include the Kanawha Canal. Last I heard, seats were filling up up quick.

2nd Grade Violin Debut

All St. Andrew’s School students have been learning to play the violin this year. Today, the second grade class showcased their achievements in a small group recital where they performed for an audience that included the 5th grade class, parents, staff, and teachers.

Ms. Ellerbe, our Music teacher, has been teaching the children to play the violin in small groups (up to eight children) twice per week. For today’s recital, she lead each group as they performed, Pizzicato (named for a playing technique that involves plucking the strings of the violin ), Mary Had a Little Lamb, and Hot Cross Buns. Performances by each group were captured and are featured below.

After a very successful debut, the children are now looking forward to performing again at the Spring Concert. The concert will be held in Baldwin Hall on Monday, May 19, from 6:00-7:00 p.m. (it will begin after the Family Association Meeting and Dinner).

The Otter Closet will sell gently used clothing…but here’s the cool part: proceeds will be divided and half will support our school’s violin program while the other half is donated to Full Circle Grief Center. In addition, students will help run the shop, incorporating their economics lessons into this real-life effort. Everybody benefits!
